My Am Bresse seem to keep pretty clean. And they are very friendly chicks. Need some?

That's a silly question! Of course I NEED some. I need some of every breed out there.

Nice to see you too. I think Kelly & Mary may have been the 2 ladies at the next table at lunch. They were sitting across from Mario & Shanti I think. I think someone's suggestion of name tags next year is a great idea.

hmm, they both have pretty large white dots on their heads -- i had one CCL chick last year who totally looked like a girl when she hatched, except for a wisp of a white dot -- grew up to start crowing. i'd at least keep an eye on the one on the left, they might both be boys.

I hate when the Pullets turn into cockerels.....

i felt particularly bad, since i'd given her to a friend with three other pullets, as a starter laying flock -- could not have been more surprised when they reported that she was crowing! i'd have sworn up and down all through her youth that she was a she -- looked nothing like her hatchmate, who was a pale-colored CCL boy with HUGE, early-developing comb and wattles -- she had "girl coloring," for lack of a better description, and very girl-looking comb -- but alas, that wisp of white dot turned out to be the better indicator.

I love an assortment of chicken breeds and egg colors so when I happened to see her at a feed store I brought her home as a young pullet. I have never had good luck with buying older chicks and she is no exception to this rule. A little on the wild side and the all white feathers tend to look dirty more than not. I think an all white chicken is beautiful but she is rather dull. Maybe just the hatchery stock and not the breed.
Is there such a thing as a white chicken that cleans itself? We have Great Pyrenees dogs and they can get filthy dirty and somehow become all clean again in no time on their own.

I am with you on loving the assortment. I have Delawares and they get filthy when it rains...needless to say they look pretty good right now. This shot was taken during our first and pretty much last real rain of the season.

I'm starting to feel the incubator craze coming on. I sold all the chicks. Now the only babies around here are 8 weeks old.

Time to change that! Not totally sold on the idea yet as we still have out of state company.

Anybody besides me start thinking about what eggs to gather and hatch in the same way one would plan a very important party?

Yes!!! I have lists and have made contacts so that all my chicks will be in a row when broody season starts around here.

That's exactly how I've ended up with such an eclectic layer flock! I wish that I had the land and the money to breed lots more breeds than I have. I can count on one hand the breeds that I don't want!

Okay! My hatch is complete! Both of the 2 late set/staggered hatch eggs hatched so I had 12 out of 13 hatch! The last one hatched yesterday and it incubated at 62% humidity with no turning for days 16-21. Here are some pics of my Pita Pinta/Langshan cross chicks. Aren't they adorable?!!!

They look the most like a blue Langshan but have some dark markings on their heads and beaks that look like the Pitas. The first one that hatched had black lines under its eyes just like a football player.

First 5 chicks (4 are 3 days old and 1 is 1 1/2 days old)

Final baby just hours old.
