Will you be ready to show some next year? How are the Dels coming along?

I wish! I have better size/weight/tails on my Dorkings but am struggling with white lobes and now duck foot, since I didn't pay close enough attention to that. I can't seem to get all the good traits and none of the dqs on the same bird!

I put the Dels in the breeding pens last night and am going to start collecting eggs for hatching. I'm so wanting to show, I was even looking at those pullets, this morning, wondering if any could be close enough to Standard.

I need to be patient.

Pita Pinta Roosters are the cool kids....They are like big foot ball jocks. I am sure the Pita Pinta pullets will love him too soon.
Hahaha...They are just sooooo dreamy.

I have been planning to get mottled javas because a) I like their look b) no one else has them around here and c) they are on ALBC's threatened list but am thinking about switching to Pita Pintas. I am planning to work with Dels and NHs this spring...for fun not for show and eventually I want to work with CA Greys because they don't have the publicity that comes with an ALBC designation but they may be critically endangered so I wouldn't really be helping the MJs because I wouldn't be breeding them. You all make them sound so special and I can drive to get eggs instead of having them shipped.

Petrock - adorable babies!

Tommysgirl - I never did an autopsy, but she had the symptoms of going into the nest box and nothing ever coming of it, and she lost a lot of weight. She had a long, happy chicken life.

Yeah...I have seen those symptoms. Did your girl lay for short periods followed by months of nothing and did a lot of the eggs she did lay have issues? I am glad she lived so long. There is hope for Della.

I love Delawares

They are my favorites!

I live on the Delta halfway between SF and Sac.

Sounds like easy road trip distance when/if my acquisition plot works out.

Usually one bird will really jump out as my favorite, but not this time. I always love the black Sumatras and spend a long time looking at them. Those are actually my favorite breed. I also have developed a silly affection for bantam frizzled Cochins, the ones that look almost round.
I was really bummed that neither of the breeds that I raise were at this show - or the one in Hollister.
That surprises me Kim! I am willing to bet that when you start showing your Dels that people will fall all over themselves drooling over them and their popularity will grow...in the mean time it will likely mean BOB for you!

We had a Del pullet at our fair show this summer and she was not at all close to SOP in any way. Kids around here go the hatchery/feed store route more often than not. When I retire I may start a heritage poultry 4-H project for the whole county. No time now but eventually that would be a fun thing I think

I want to know too @capayvalleychick ...any Kathyinmo culls that need a home?

I'm keeping all those cull pullets for (eating egg) layers. I have a couple of the males in the cull pen that will be butchered.
Heehee I guess I need to be patient too

They are cute! The line up shot is really a good one!

There was a male NH at the show that had a sign on his cage ... hatching eggs $100. a dozen!

WOW! but I guess I shouldn't be too surprised since I have not been able to find NH eggs ... I have seen some list as New Hampshire Red eggs but as I understand it that is a red flag for American/Hatchery stock.

I heart my NH roo. He is a hatchery boy but he is super sweet and I think in his chicken way he is grateful that I saved him from his life of perpetual bachelorhood and gave him a bunch of girls. He comes running when I come out the back door, he looks for things to give me and though he doesn't love to be picked up he will tolerate it. I have a couple of drama queens and the other day they were squawking to beat the band. He is super broad breasted but he was off like lightening to see what the trouble was. It is hysterical watching him run. I don't know how to post video but many of you have probably seen a big bodied boy hustle and it's quite funny.

For those with the brinsea brooders: I believe it says they cover 20 chicks 1-2 weeks. So do you have 2 -3 for after that? Seems like a lot of $$ for just a couple weeks
