California - Northern

If I remember correctly she has kids who show and sh dosnt want to compete with her own birds. But it is not uncommon for some breeders and showers to not sell eggs or roosters in their state.

They will often make exceptions but that is complicated to say in an ad. She's done it that way for years so not like it is just these birds. I know she bends it for people but I don't know about those discussion s.

I think those eggs are darker then you think unless you caught the color exactly or they are your darkest eggs. Those are not 4s. Are your Marans fcbm or some other?
Debs flock and Pam in paradise are both working on very dark eggs.

What type of incubator do you have and do your broodies get disturbed by other chickens?

The [picture was taken indoors with a flash so the color is a bit washed out compared to what I see with my eye. I have had a couple of darker ones in the last few days. These are 2 differnet pictures of the same eggs (just rearranges in the carton) so you can see I seem to be having problems capturing the color consistently. The 2 in the middle of the top picture are from today and yesterday. They are the ones on the bottom in the second picture.

I have a Farm Innovator Pro incubator with forced air and an egg turner. I have had decent hatches with it, but not as good as the broody. I have a small broody coop I set up inside the run of my main chicken pen. She will not be disturbed by the other chickens...

Farm innovators didn't do well for marans. If she won't get chucked off the nest id give them to her. But just don't beat yourself up over hatch rate on shipped marans eggs.

The first ones I ever ordered and tried in that incubator were terrible. I ordered 12 and about 1/2 didn;t even start. I was using the reccomended humidity and then found out later they do better with a much drier hatch. I ordered another 18 from someone else (on Ebay). That hatch was much better 10 from 18, but they were supposed to all be FBCM and one had chipmunk markings and 2 were blue. They may have still been marans, but not what I ordered. I much prefer to let the hen do the work though. She does it MUCH better than me.

All the chicks from that hatch but 1 were killed by skunks before I ever got to see what the odd colored ones turned out to be. They were feather-legged...

thanks for adding Pam!

Pam, Deb and SunnyDawn are working together on the dark egg project.

Reno, Auburn? and Paradise.

Ron.....someone suggested Pam before when I was looking for blue egg producers. I PM'd her but didn't hear from her for a very long time. She was super busy over the holiday with the store and her birds. By the time I heard from her I had already gotten 2 EE from Chickee. She was having incubator problems and hoping to get it fixed and start some chicks soon. She had a waiting list though. She mentioned OE, but we didn't talk about Marans.

She has them so if interested, check with her.

They sound like very nice Marans too!

Costco has a 170 5 chicken coop atm. Good buy
I have one of their coops from last year and that is what I use as a broody coop. The ones this year are better...they have an extra door on the end mine doesn't have. Waaaay better price at Costco thatn I have sen the same coops for other places online. They others were more like $300+ for similar ones but not quite as big.

I will also have birchen marans eggs this spring -- one girl is laying already, the other looks like she might start any day...

and in case anyone is interested, I have a "spare" black marans pullet, who has a small bit of copper showing at her neck, so i don't want to have her in the same pen as the other marans, and could consider giving her up -- she's almost at POL and very handsome. should have nice dark eggs. if anyone is interested, please PM me!

If I were closer I would definitely consider it!
