I finally got some time to butcher some cockerels and a 2 year- old hen. Going to make some chicken soup:) I wish I had some earlier this month when I was so sick. I am starting to get better at processing. I skinned them because I didn't want to set up hot water for plucking.

They look very tasty!

I am cooking Chicken Tika Massala and the chicken is a Basque hen. I could tell because there were a couple of feathers on the wing.

Mine looked quite a bit different with the skin on.

I wonder if it is my Buff Orphington who laid it...maybe it's a "Buff" thing. The older hen I got from you is looking like she might be ready to lay soon, but the younger one not so much. She is the smallest of all my birds and I think lowest on the pecking order. For a while she would not come out of the coop when I would take food out for them unless I opened the hatch where I collect eggs. Then she would come thru a nest box and have me lift her out. The others would run her off from the feed pan (I am giving Fermented Feed). I had a round one, but switched to a 36" long trough so now she can find a place to eat more easily without getting pecked. She is getting more confident now. She is the friendliest of all my girls and will follow me around when they are out in the yard. She has been squatting for the last month or so. I really love her so even if it takes a while to get eggs from her I have no problem with that. I suspect she will start soon as the days get longer. My pen does not get a lot of sun this time of year with it so low in the sky.
Ameraucanas, especially the W/BWs are on the small side, but big in personality! She has always been such a sweet girl. Her sisters are laying gorgeous blue eggs. Can't wait for you to get some!

Can I put my eggs in lockdown a day or half a day early? I just wanna take the egg turners out and get it all set up this evening... Then up the humidity tomorrow. Would that be OK???

It really all depends on your schedule. If the air cells look good, go ahead and lock them down.

It is great to hear from your!

The chicks look very nice! Your picture taking skills are getting very good too.

They are adorable! What breeds are they?
Thanks!! Pictures sure aren't my strong point.

I have some Silkies, a couple of Frizzled Silkies, and 2 black Orphington "project" chicks (Papa brooder is doing a project with his Orphingtons, so the males should carry 1 black gene and one chocolate gene). The Orphingtons are so beefy compared to the Silkies.
