Speckled Sussex...

Light Brahmas, Bertha and Charlotte(guest starring Nelly, the obsessive herding freak)

My most prettiest girl, Carolina :)

And of course, Splash, the girl with two different eyes. I originally planned on selling her as a baby but what can I say...I love unique things, birds included.

Pretty girls! I like unique too...what can I say.....

I'm just glad that I didn't have to learn about it by losing one of my girls.  That would be devastating!  I have some diatomaceous earth that I will be adding to the pen in the place they like to dust bathe too as soon as things dry up a bit.   Does anyone know if it safe to use Sevin dust on a broody hen on eggs?  If so, should I just dust the nests or put it on the hen too?

DE didn't work for us. I've done lots of research and I've read to use wood ash. From your fire place or burn pile. Obviously you have to make sure it's not hot and once it gets wet it's no good. Put it where they dust bath. Unless they have an infestation. Then you dust bath them. I haven't used this but if we ever get a problem that will be our first option. We have used frontline plus for a lice problem. One application and they were gone and have never come back. That was a long time ago.

This is my second failed hatch. This one was $90 worth of eggs. The last one was $30. It's a very big loss for me.

:( I'm sorry! How disappointing and frustrating. Something can't be right with the bator/thermometers.

This has a bunch of stuff in it that helps figure out hatch problems.

What is your incubator?

Aww...man! $90 is a big loss for anyone, but especially in your situation. Maybe look for some cheap local eggs to try until you get the bator tweaked....

Good to know. I have ash in my fireplace, but it has been there about 4-5 years. That's the last time we used it. We have a double fireplace and it seems to get the whole house smoky when we use it. It doesn't produce much heat either. I think it just lets more heat out when we are not using it. Kind of wish it was just a regular one.

I do have a product called SCATT that I use on my finches for Air Sac Mites. It also kills any external mites. I think I will try to find a dosage for chickens. It is similar to ivermection, but the active ingredient is moxydectin. It stays in the system longer. Usually with finches you have to treat for 2 days every week for 3 weeks. With SCATT, once every 6 months is all you need.

Jessica, again I'm so sorry. You're working and going to school, so to take this kind if hit to your wallet is very hard. I'm impressed with your work ethic and determinaton.

I come to Carmichael about once a month to visit my husband's family. I know that I have fertile eggs, but they're not the breeds you're looking for. Hoewever, I would freely donate a few to your worthy cause (chicken education) once you get things sorted out :)
