They're hatching!!! Day 26!!!!

400

HOOOOOOORAY!!!!!!! Now I feel bad. I tossed 2 eggs that may have hatched :/

I'm so happy for you!!!!

Those of you with Marans: How do yours lay? I read the reviews and it is hard to say if people are expecting too much. I am perfectly happy with 3 or so eggs a week from a hen who will keep laying for years to come so I wanted to know what your experiences have been. I would only be adding a couple, most likely birchen from lawatt but I do want dark eggs.

i haven't been keeping careful track, but my one birchen pullet who's laying, lays at least every other day, if not more -- i also have two cuckoo marans hens, who lay beautiful LARGE eggs when they're laying, but seem to stop laying more often/for longer than my other hens.

I'm doing the course of Tylan. The Oxine mist I've read about but don't know where to get it, or how to administer it. We've wondered about mold. The chickens are forever rooting around the compost pile and digging stuff up. Does it make sense for mold in the throat to re-occur or grow more with cold/wet weather?
I'm reading about Oxine and it makes sense to use it. It's worth a try! Is this something JSWest would carry?

At what point do you quit trying to cure a bird and just keep it comfortable while nature takes its course?

This bird is valuable ONLY from an emotional standpoint. We really like him!

Obviously we plan to keep treating him for now. However, I question it. Since he is really struggling to breath and we can't afford a vet visit - how long and how much effort should we extend in treatment? Is culling a better choice? He looks like he's about to die with every breath.
You should do what works for you.

If you decide to end his life, do not feel guilty. You did what you could to try to make him better, but it didn't work.

If I were in your place, I would have someone end his life quickly. I wouldn't let him suffer, since he can't breathe well. Even though you really like him, letting him live when he is suffering is not a kindness.
