The magic of dicky finally faild?? Curses! Ahh well its gotta happen some time. Im sure you know this but if you get eggs with funky air cells you should be able to collect your insurance money.
This will depend on the broodies. Some like to share chicks some attack others and their chicks some will try and steal the other hens chicks. I used to have small coops I could divide into 2 so they went in and out separately. The other problem is if they sit together it is common for hen 1s eggs to hatch And hen 2 to abandon her eggs to co brood with her sister. I once had an icelandic and a turkey try and co brood together. So I would advise having somewhat seperate spaces.

The box was actually in pretty good shape and none of the eggs were broken, so it would be hard to blame the PO. I think they likely froze in transit. I am going to freeze a couple eggs to see what happens to the air sac. I will keep you posted.

Call Ducks or Yellow house farms...Maybe even one of the others from the Heritage thread did that experiment. He said that they hatched fine as long as the egg did not crack.

There may be a problem with frozen eggs and de compression?

So some nasty @#$%# (person) turned me in to the chicken police (Code enforcement). It was weird. Not a noise violation, or anything like that. They complained to code enforcement. So my plan is to downsize my flock, and fight the city. I got the letter last Monday and cried all day Monday. Tuesday I put my big girl pants on, gathered all the eggs I had, and put them in the 'bator (chickens under 6 months old are excluded from the city animal code). I already found Melvin a new home, and sent a couple girls over to my parents house for a while. Has anyone else gone through this? I technically can't have any chickens, but my neighbors on both sides can have 10. If anyone close to me wants some hens, send me a message. I would rather re-home them to a fellow BYC-er.

Im a big believer that putting the box on the side kills the air sacks. Thus I blame the po. Well not blame but think that is often the cause. I put an up arrow on my boxes now to try and help.
Im excited to here the frozen egg experiment!

Wow that is interesting.

Do you know if air sacs are more stable on fresh eggs than old eggs? I can't understand why almost all the eggs had floating air sacs when it does not seem like they were bounced around. Perhaps it is air compression. Its a mystery to be solved.

That really sucks! Some people just seem to exist to cause problems for other people. I am lucky that the folks on the side where my pen is don't seem to care, but I do get nervous when one of the girls gets noisy. I was able to re-home my one roo within days of his first attempt to crow so I dodged that bullet. I is so frustrating when people all around seem to be able to have them but you can't. When we first moved to Paradise in 1986 we had a neighbor that owned cats, but would shoot other peoples if they were out and came near his yard. He had sort of the cat equivalent of a chicken tractor that he put his cat in to go outside, but he also would spread birdseed outside in his yard to attract birds, then get ****** when it also attracted cats. We are fairly rural up here and had a rental with a small outbuilding in the back that we convert to a chicken coop and then ordered chicks Minimum was 25 at that time. My kids were 4 1/2 and 7 at the time. The chicks were just about at the POL when we got a notice from code enforcement. I took it to the town council and they said that they agreed that it was ridiculous to live in a rural community and not be able to keep a few chickens. I was only allowed to keep 7 of them and no roosters, but it was better than none. I didn't really want to keep all 25 anyway. Good luck with the city council. Hopefully the fact that the neighbors can have them will help....although sometimes it's because the are Grandfathered in. I know a few people here in town that have smaller lots than me that have horses, but if they move, the new owners of the property won;t be able to keep them. Also if horses are gone for a period of time (I think a year or so) they will not be able to get more.
