California - Northern

Wethe new Genesis arrived & we have had it up & running for 2 days & I will load it today with my darkest Marans eggs, Blue/Black AMs, B/B/S Orpingtond, Buff Orpingtons, Light Sussex & a couple of the new Brown Leghorns for fun. We shall see. With the new hygrometer built it & our external hose setup to add water when needed I hope it does a good job.
Check the humidity reading. Mine was reading 10 lower than it was. I will check on the new controller tonight--Setting up to hatch Dels tonight.

Mine think the same of me...but my daughter is looking to buy a house and one of her 'must haves' is that they can have chickens. So I guess I'm not that crazy after all. Either that or she is too!!

I might have to get some of the chicken poop stuff next time I go in there. I like lavender too and the ingredients sound great!
The daughter who gave me this does have 3 chickens but she doesn't like to handle them. I've offered to help her with any chicken chores that require holding them.

Thanks Ron, I will do that I have an external thermometer/Hygrometer I will stick in there when I go back home & see what it reads. I am going to use the external one in an old styro given to me without turning slats. It looks to be a Little Giant. It has the turner but none of the slats but who can argue with free. I thought I would try setting it up as a hatcher . What humidity do you use in the Hovabator? I experimented in the big Brinsea cabinet & started with Bev Davis recommendations & I was drowning fully formed chicks so started playing around & settled on 100 degrees with 50 to 55 humidity throughout. I hatch in my enclosed glass front porch so there are no drafts to worry about but it gets a liitle .chilly in there at night but I think the auto thermometer takes care of that. I am hoping with the new set up and the external hoses to add water without opening I can kind of set it & forget it except for water levels.

Congrats!

Sounds like an interesting cross.

Sorry about the raccoon.  How did it get in?

The lock was closed but not clicked up. So I think it wiggled the door until it opened. It did not scare her she must have been the only prey animal in the universe that is a sound sleeper.

The racoon pack we have right now is very smart. They scared my breese out of the safe part of the coop to the wall so they could catch them, opened a piece of chain link fencing, and tried the lock on the window to the main coop.

Scared the crap out of cranberries who guards the window and woke me up when he did that.

We also have a skunk coming by the pens waking The roosters up at 4 am. Its crazy right now. Did I mention im 10 minutes from downtown san jose???

Also one of the turkeys has fond a new nesting spot.. on the top of the duck coop! As in on the top of the Kennel cover. Getting thoae eggs is tricky!

I use these

to keep the humidity in the 35 to 40% range for incubation. I have two in one incubator now. The other incubator, I fill one tank and it goes to about 45%. I wait until humidity goes down to 25% and add more water.

The glad cups last about 5 days before I have to fill them.

When I set up for hatching, I fill all the tanks and often have to add a glass storage container with a sponge in it to get humidity up to 65% or so.

The higher the humidity is during hatch the less Oxygen is in the incubator--they suffocate, not drown. Humidity is too high if condensation gets on the viewing window.

The third incubator is an Octagon 40 with a humidity pump--set at 35% currently.

How old is she? My kids grew up with all sorts of livestock, including chickens, dicks, geese, sheep, goats and horses. We ate our surplus, but my husband did the killing. I have a niece that would come up from San Jose every summer. She is now in her late 30s and still won't eat chicken-on-the-bone though. She was very traumatized by the idea that we were eating chickens she had seen running around..

I have the humidity set between 40 & 45 right now. In the Brinsea Cabinet the chicks I called drown were totally soaked & water ran out when I cracked the eggs & did my eggtopsies. That was at 65% humidity the last 3 days.

That's how mine is too! She does lay a pretty egg though. I am moving her and one of my EEs to another pen this weekend. I may have to get a net to grab her!
