OK...here are some close ups of combs. The first 2 are the one I am leaning toward Marans...although the legs are not feathered



These 2 are of the one I am leaning toward OE on. It seems a little smaller and less active so I think it was the last to hatch




I can crop these to a more "extreme closeup" of both of them if needed.

Please pay no attention to the small amount of nail polish on that thumb.

Dilemma......Last night when I went to bed there were 2 Marans chicks that had hatched. One has feathered legs...the other doesn't. There were 2 pipped egg with just a very small pip. One was an OE and the other a Mottled AM. This morning the OE is also fully out and all three look pretty fluffed. The problem is...they all look pretty much alike to me and I can;t tell the OE from the Marans. These are not great shots but I am hoping someone can tell me which is which. The one with the pin legband I am confident is a Marans...the other 2 I can't tell!

Now are you or @Hangtown Farms hatching any UofA Blue/ Penedesenca crosses? I would really love to see how those turn out. I'm curious what color they'll be

Hatching looks like such hard work. No wonder the chicks have to be strong to make it. Congrats on those ducks and to all the peeps with new peeps! Ron, hope you haven't lost too much sleep. I see that you now have a new title - Daily Digest Guru. You should be the Hatching Guru!

I slept fine last night. Most of them were happily under the ecoglow.

For me the hardest part is culling the weak ones.
I have had too cull 2 from my last hatch.
still makes me sad.

I may have to cull one from this hatch. The problem with the Brinsea is that some that should not have made it still make it.

Still, 18 hatched and 17 healthy ones is a very good fertile hatch. It is not a bad fertile hatch too! I set 24 and had 4 clears and one blood ring. Kim's cockerel is doing a good job!

Yea im left with 1 black silkie and i think 3-4 white silkies.
whats weird is in all of this none of my buff brahmas doed. If we get a few more from cackle im replacing a few birds (mostly the doms) since we would have to get 25 i was thinking gold laced and blue cochin bamtams,japanse bantams, and bllack and buff silkies. would all of those do okay in ssnow?

I want to issue a warning to those of you who use pine shavings.  I just opened a brand new extra large package that my DH picked up for me from Scott's Valley Feed and it has mold in it.   George brought it home a couple of weeks ago when it wasn't raining and immediately brought it into the house so it had to have gotten wet at the feed store or before they got it.  It is such a pain to return things to that feed store when we live 2 hours away from it.  DH is not into returning things to stores so will just eat the cost.  The short of it is to be sure to check your pine shavings carefully at this time of year especially if using them in brooders with chicks.

I ran into similar problem up here but it was feed instead! I usually get breeders/bantams/guail "game feed" 21% protein. The cashier said they were out so I got turkey/game feed 28% instead. The guys in the warehouse were confused until they went over to check, when they lifted the bags the bottoms were moldy! I'm glad they care enough to pull it from inventory.

Maybe the dying is finally over. none are weak right now and none look like they are wanting to die. we lost a total of 12 so when my mom calls cackle she may just get credit and.get another order when it gets warmer

The chicks that are still alive now have started up their organs.

When the kidney is damaged, it takes up to two days for the toxins to kill the chick. The amount of kidney damage and the ability to heal is what is critical.

It is so sad to lose that many but the rest should be fine. Watch for failure to thrive--those do not grow.

Yes they should all be fine now. Watch for poopy butt--They were way stressed.

On a funny note the chicks that are left fiund out they like cooked egg yolk ground up with a little crumbles lol. i filled a little tray with it last night (they have a feeder of regular food too) and this morning the little container is pecked clean

Thanks for the "Heads up"! I just bought 2 from TSC. I have only opened one but it seems to be OK. I will definitley be checking!

They are still having a little pasty butt but ive been wiping most of it off somr of it is so stuck to feathers it wouldnt come off without pulling the feathers
