ok, birchens it is! fortunately they are a totally different colored egg than any of the layers in Mabel the broody's pen -- and since i was a little worried about the size difference between marans chicks and campine chicks, i just gave her 8 marans eggs from two girls. will see how she does!

go mabel!

The top photo is of a batch of Pekin based hatchery ducks from Amy Beth. The first duckling is a wild Mallard that the Egg Farmer (Jeremy) found after a pasture was mowed disturbing the Mom and leaving a nest of eggs! The last picture is of the just hatched ducklings that grew up to become the big ones in the first picture.

All of the Ducklings are so cute!

Ok I have the broody orp in a wire bottom cage and she's not happy lol! How long before she will return to laying? How long should she stay in the cage?

I always kept mine in there until she stopped making the broody mama noises but I think it depends on how broody she was. Should take 2 or 3 days.

Well 4 crele olive eggers are out 2 more pipping along with 2 Empordanesa pipping
I should learn my lesson not to mix and match blue and dark brown eggs now I have 3 that have been out 14-18 hours and 1 that just came out. I don't want to open the incubator so hopefully they will just hang tight. I know they will be fine just like it when everything hatches at the same time

The Delaware hatch that I finished yesterday had 4 groups of chicks in baskets. I had to get them out because they hatched so well that they were very cramped in the baskets. Those Dels are big too.

Each time I opened the incubator, I sprayed a mist from a spray bottle. I had no shrink wrapped chicks.

It would be perfectly fine to mist them and remove the 18 hour old chicks. You can also fill the water tanks at the same time.

I am looking forward to more pictures!

given how quickly the RCom temps & humidity recover after the lid's been opened, is this really an issue? i keep imagining baby chicks hatching under a mama hen, they're not going to have perfectly consistent temp/humidity either... i wouldn't leave the lid off for ages, but a quick open to scoop babies out shouldn't cause huge trouble?
