You should 100% have black solider flies. It would make a tremendous difference for you and you are close enough to our climate youd be able to grow them 9 months out of the year. Feed them to the breese for tastier chicken.

We have a tumbling composter that grows bumper crops of black soldier flies! The girls love it when we dump it! Maybe I should grow some for the farm birds. That is where all of the older Bresse live. Tastier chicken sounds good to me!

I have a long legged Langshan cockerel defrosting in my frig for tomorrow's supper. We are going to have to cut him in pieces to get him to fit in the Instant Pot!

Wonder if they'd all roll their eyes at the crazy chicken mom/grandma's or agree that it's actually fun Last night my 12 yr old had to work really hard with me! I was (AM) so thankful for her help!

Mine has just started the eye rolling stuff and I've set out to nip that in the bud! She will say that she is tired of the chickens but she is almost as excited as me when we hatch more. She always picks out one favorite chick and then wants to keep it. Chicken math starts young!

My question for the day, to be considered an Easter Egger, does a chicken need to have Ameraucana in its background or just lay a blue/blue green/green colored egg? I have several Pita Pinta/Cream Legbar mix chicks and I'm wondering how to market them. Having not raised any of this mix to maturity, I guess that I am just assuming that they will lay a green egg.

They are not EEs really--they are not Araucana based. A different breed was the Blue egg colored gene carrier. Some would call them EEs though.

I jist went out to get eggs and there is blood all ovver one part of the coop (one of our nest boxes fell earlier could it of hit one of the hens?) Thrre was blood on tye piece of wood under the box to. nnone of the hens look hurt but where would the blood of come from?

That's always a scary thing to see! I would assume that the hurt one would have blood on her somewhere. You might have to catch and check each one. We had one of our girls miss the closing of the coop one night. In the middle of the night, we heard her screaming outside our bedroom window. I ran out and let her in the coop. I did a quick visual but in the low light didn't see anything. The next day, I saw a little blood on her back and upon closer examination saw that she had two deep slash marks on her back. Vetericyn helped it heal and she is fine now & is never late into the coop. One of my 5 week old chicks had blood all over one wing this week. Scary! One of his hatchmates had pulled out a tail feather and it bled like crazy. Vetericyn with Pick no More on top of it and he is fine. And the backyard chicken drama goes on...

I have 2 OE cockerels and possibly 3 Bresse....lol.

I'm sure I will have more soon now that the eggs have hatched. Thre is no way I would be lucky enough to end up with all of them being pullets...
