OHH nice! I scored some nice roost things at harbor frieghts throwing away of shipping materials this weekend, but they did not rock like that!

Mario has done almost nothing for about 10 years. he is doing a daily sketch thing on reddit.. sketchdaily?? maybe. He is having a lot of fun. Some days he spends 10 min, some days he will be at it for a few hours. The x rated takes on everything would go over really well there if your DH gets the urge!

Liz, your chicks are beautiful!

Hoping to hatch (for the first time) some chicks from our little Serama flock. Was planning on using a broody bantam Cochin or Silkie, but they are young and may not be dedicated when the time comes. Are Serama eggs difficult to incubate? What type of incubator do you use or recommend? Would a broody be better? Any input is more than welcome!

Nice lacing on her! I've had success using both the broody and the incubator. I've never found the Seramas to be particularly hard to hatch with either. I do notice that they sometimes hatch a little earlier than planned in the incubator. Sometimes as much as two days. My incubators are the Hovabator Genesis 1588 digital models. Also, the Serama mamas seem to be very dedicated little broody monsters. So I would suggest using whichever method works for you.

I just put mine on loosely...largely to keep the dogs out of it. I keep mine in the house on a rubber mat in the dining room. I don't think it will explode unless you over-filled the bucket. Bottom 3rd should be no problem. Are you on Beekissed's FF thread?

Thanks...I am not but I will be now... Since mine is in the feed shed it needs to be covered to keep out the mice. Don't want to find floaters in there

@HappyChooks In the interest of putting my intentions out into the universe and encouraging broodiness I have subscribed to the Easter Hatch a Long thread. I think I will start putting CG eggs aside big end up too and maybe this weekend I will move my girls into their "breeding pens". It means clipping a wing on a few of them

I sent a PM to @debs_flock not sure when she is coming home but think it is sometime this month hope she has a couple of NH and an SPR girl for me. This is what will be where when all is said and done

I want to see if the Dorkings and the CG make sex links when paired with Ozzie. I will put the Dorkings in with the General in the fall to check for the same thing.

Thank you for letting me natter on about my hybrids and what not...my H while very supportive sort of glazes over when this subject comes up. He loves the eggs and seeing the birds in the yard but doesn't have the same fascination with chicks that I do.

I'm going to do something that's a first for me... Had this little rooster, game cross, 'bout five years old. Well, found him yesterday, dead, apparently killed by another rooster given the blood all over his head. Usually I would just bury him, but he was still warm so I decided to process him and I'll be cooking him instead.

Anyone have any recipes for a small (1kg) rooster?

I had a very good hatch rate even with older eggs, I saved up until I had 2 dozen from my 5 pullets/hens. My very first hatch of Seramas were hatched by my Aseel broody. She did a great job very fierce mama. I broke down and bought myself the Hovabator 1588 Genesis with auto turner. It worked great for me, 15 out of 19 in lock down hatched. Thank you both. You make it sound easy. I'm trying to avoid buying an incubator, so bought broody types instead, but am getting antsy waiting for them to get the urge. Seeing all the darling chick pictures is making it worse.

But with "floaters" you would have an additional source of protein for your flock! Pickled mice treats!

I enjoyed reading about your chicken plans! It is always good to have a plan and fun to deviate from it! When we started with chickens, I really liked Barred Rocks and planned to get more. Then I got hooked into trying out different breeds. I brought home a blue Langshan chick from the feed store and fell in love with her. So, BBS Langshans are at the top of my chicken list along with Pita Pintas. Some breeds I thought that I would like until I had them. They were okay but not good layers or not friendly enough, etc.

My DH is supportive of my habit. He helps me build coops and work on the pens at the farm. He even cleans out the big coop almost every weekend. He usually rolls his eyes when I talk about more chicks but today he told me to put all the Pita Pinta eggs that I have into the incubator. Me thinks the man does not know what he is saying! I have dozens of Pita Pinta/PP mix eggs sitting here on my counter top. I accidentally dropped two cartons today and was upset about it until I realized there are a lot more where they came from!
