So I'm getting baby chicks! 6 Straight Run Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, and 1 Cream Legbar. Woohoo!
I want to set up the brooder in the garage, but it gets really cold outside at night, and I'm afraid the garage would be too cold for them, even with a heat lamp. Of course, by the time I get them it will be the first or second week of April. Should they be fine to have their brooder in the garage by then? How do I make sure they stay warm enough at night?
Also, what size brooder do I need for 7 chicks? Been about a year since I've brooded babies :)

Wow! Much drama here this morning. Something came in the big dog door and attacked my seremas on the covered porch .

Everyone is fine but that is scary. One of the new girls screams like a baby. I woke from a dead sleep and ran buck naked out to see what was happening. Mario said the fox tried on the ducks tonight too and tried to tip the quail cage over. It has avoided the trap might need other means.

Oh wow. Glad no one was hurt. A bobcat?? Yikes! Not even sure what to do with it. Not sure if it's too soon for it to have babies yet. So I'm betting he doesn't look friendly in that cage you have.

Hard to guess on the temps in April but you could set it up early and see how the temps do overnight. Hope your blrw's are as friendly as ours are. They are DH's favorite breed until they start crowing.

Lets just say the local office didnt think I had any options after the first attack 2 years ago.

I feel a bit helpless here.
I would call the local office and tell them you have a live bobcat in a trap and they should either come pick it up or at least give you someone to call. I used to know a guy from Fish & Game in Chico that would take any injured or trapped wildlife and rehab/release them but he's retired. I'd hope they have a similar program near you.

Congrats on the chicks! What kind of brooder do you have? And how long do you plan to keep them in it? My largest indoor brooder is a 4 ft x 2 ft stock tank with lid. I currently have 19 three week old chicks in it at night only. They go outside in a secure play area during the day. It has a solid wall on one side and 1 ft walls on two other sides for wind protection. They really outgrew the brooder by 2 wks. My hatch before that one had 11 chicks and I kept them in the brooder for 4-5 wks before moving them out to an outdoor brooder with mostly solid sides (2 can be removed for increased ventilation during the day).

Keep using the medicine but she may be blind in that eye not. It could have been an injury.
Never heard of a white eye in chickens, but agree with what Ron says.

So sorry you are having such predator troubles. I'd say get a good dog. Although, I have friends off Uvas Rd. in Morgan Hill that had a cougar come right up to the guy and his dog during the day. Predators in that region don't seem to be afraid of people at all.

. Rocks have made it to Portland, should be on a truck headed South now. According to tracking they spent 26 hours in Baton Rouge.
Hope that they are fine. What kind of Rocks? I'm wondering why you would have Rocks shipped from so far away when there are so many nice ones on the west coast?

We caught a bobcat in our trap.

Did we figure out what is legal to do in this situation?
Is there a county trapper that could help you out?

One of my Uncles had a very nice Bobcat skin on his wall....
Oh, you had better run and hide before Laura reads that!

I have my chicks out in a barn, with a heat lamp, and they have been fine. They were even ok during the day, when the power went out.
Ron uses plastic storage bins as small brooders. I have used veggie totes & small stock tanks. For only 7 chicks there are lots of options.
