Wow! Much drama here this morning. Something came in the big dog door and attacked my seremas on the covered porch .

Everyone is fine but that is scary. One of the new girls screams like a baby. I woke from a dead sleep and ran buck naked out to see what was happening. Mario said the fox tried on the ducks tonight too and tried to tip the quail cage over. It has avoided the trap might need other means.

~~ I woke from a dead sleep and ran buck naked out to see what was happening....................Now Shantih, you do know there are people that would pay to see that rescue run......LOL Ever hear of Homes Funniest Movies????????????/ LOL

Lets just say the local office didnt think I had any options after the first attack 2 years ago.

I feel a bit helpless here.
We used to call & ask but always got the same answer.........shoot them if they are after your stock....that was loose dogs though.

So I'm getting baby chicks! 6 Straight Run Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, and 1 Cream Legbar. Woohoo!
I want to set up the brooder in the garage, but it gets really cold outside at night, and I'm afraid the garage would be too cold for them, even with a heat lamp. Of course, by the time I get them it will be the first or second week of April. Should they be fine to have their brooder in the garage by then? How do I make sure they stay warm enough at night?
Also, what size brooder do I need for 7 chicks? Been about a year since I've brooded babies :)
Congratulations. Hatching baby chicks is like nothing else. Quite the thrill.................. My brooders are 2 foot by 4 foot & have eco glows in them now but before I broke down & bought the eco glows I had incandescent light bulbs in there for the heat source. I just laid a thermometer on the floor under the light bulb to determine the temp & changed the light bulb according to need by age of chick. Right from the incubator my goal was 95 degrees. After that 5 degrees less each week. As long as you have room for them to get away from the heat source if they are too warm they should be okay. It worked very well for me but I had an assortment of wattage light bulbs & and they are getting harder to find now. I had anywhere from a few to many in one brooder.

Ok. Bobcat is boy. (Don't ask) no bobcats have been harmed in the resolution of this mornings events. Everyone however is gonna be late for work.

Sorry for all the questions I missed this morning im not quite tracking yet. And I got bitten by a broody silkie annoyed her breakfast was late.

Is there a county trapper that could help you out?

Oh, you had better run and hide before Laura reads that!

I have my chicks out in a barn, with a heat lamp, and they have been fine. They were even ok during the day, when the power went out.
Ron uses plastic storage bins as small brooders. I have used veggie totes & small stock tanks. For only 7 chicks there are lots of options.
Yolo County used to have a trapper. They let him go during the Great Recession of 2008 to the end of time......

All kidding aside, Fish And Game should take care of the Bobcat for you. They are very pretty Cats!

I have chicks hatching in a Genesis, One Tote Brooder with and eco glow and the other tote brooder withe New H Dels and a SG Dorking in it.

I have a Brooder space in the Garage that has the NYD chicks in it. I am going to move them to the hutch soon and may move the poor pullet out with the Pita Pintas. I think the PPs will get along fine with her. For the Garage Brooder, it is just brooder panels with pine shavings. I have some fencing squares around it and have made a top too. It keeps the Amelia X Crele Penes in place (Amelias are Crele Pene x Creme Legbars. They are wild flyers! And can also jump high with force!

@BCollie The chicks will be fine in your Garage in April. I have brooded them in the Garage in December with great results.

Good morning Kim.
I ordered Partridge Rock Bantams from Arcadian Aviaries. I really miss the pair I lost this fall/winter and hadn't seen bantams out here. I try to order as close as possible but hadn't seen any close, same with the phoenix bantams. The d'anvers were just eye candy. Since DD hoped to show them trying to quality also.

There is a lady who is breeding Colombian rock bantams in Reno. She said they're SWEET. No wonder you miss them. I'd love to see a picture when they come.

Uhhh.. I spoke fox too soon.
We caught a bobcat in our trap. Do I need to worry about if it is female?

Did we figure out what is legal to do in this situation?
We used to live in bear country. We were told that a predator has to cause damage before it is legal to shoot it.

Forest service actually told me that they don't really want to know about it. If you are protecting your family then do what you must. It's the SSS method. Said if they knew about it they would have to come out and account for all the black market body parts and that caused too much paperwork.

@ Chiquita . I could ask my son to "relocate " it on his way back up the mountain? Idk he already thinks I'm crazy pushy. Let me know if you think of something...
When I got referred out during the big bear escapades. I did the phone trail all over the place to find someone in charge. Here is what I learned. It is a felony to transport wild animals such as that. It is not however, a felony to dispose of an animal once it has threatened your family or belongings.
