I have many birds and I've never had more than one at a time with a crop problem, so that's why I wonder if there is something else going on that's causing this.

Capillaria (Capillary or Thread Worms)
There are several species of Capillaria that occur in poultry. Capillaria annulata and Capillaria contorta occur in the crop and esophagus. These may cause thickening and inflammation of the mucosa, and occasionally severe losses are sustained in turkeys and game birds.

I've never actually had a problem with capillary worms that I know of, but it *might* explain part of what you're seeing?

I am getting nervous..The first batch of shipped egg made it to NC and now the tracking says delivered!

I hope they made it ok!

I'm sure you did an excellent job of packing them. Are you expecting to hear either way?

I'm trying to read up a little bit but I wanted to say I am sorry to those that have ordered chicks recently and lost some in shipping. I never understand the longer shipping times on some of the hatcheries.

Wow that tag feature is handy!

We lost two more yesterday afternoon. But 2 pullets and the roo are still plugging along. 1 pullet is acting perky and dashing around like nothing happened. The crops on the other two aren't very squishy now and they are still standing still and not very active but more they are occasionally moving about and singing. Which is WAY more than they did yesterday. I'm feeding them scrambled duck egg for now and offered some chick grit in it. I figured out what happened- they were being fed out of the mixed food all the other birds get fed (it's flockraiser mixed with whole and cracked grains). They have never been offered grit and they haven't been on the ground (just in my coop in a large dog kennel crate). I am guessing they have been eating this food for a little more than week. whole grains in crops devoid of grit in chicks. Nice attentive chicken mom. I feel so awful. I have begun adding my 7 yo daughter in the chore loupe the past month and I think that's where the breakdown started happening. She had no idea they couldn't have whole wheat, oat etc grains.

The feedstore I go to feeds whole grains and *no* grit to their caged birds and they seem to do okay. I suspect you have something else going on and strongly suggest using the free necropsy service that available to CA residents. See link in my sig.

Ack. Im so sorry. I put sand in the baby ducks feed because they were eating grass and I didnt know if we had enough stone left in the yard and they were ignoring it . I hope they are ok now that you have caught it! On a lighter note... im bad at math. Im getting the hatching incuator now for lockdown tomorrow. .

Oops. Also where are the partrige silkies coming from???

Beautiful geese! That is the one thing that makes the drive to Sac fro Dr appointments bearable for me....seeing the rice fields full of Tundra Swans, Canada Geese, Mallrds, coots, etc. The swans will fly over our house during the fall and spring migrations. You can hear them for miles before you can even see them in the sky...
