So if I breed my Marans rooster to my EE, what are the chances I'll get an olive layer? She's a good layer of nice big eggs. Just wondering my odds. I think she has a slight green tint to her eggs. Can't remember.

Do any of you raise turkeys for meat birds? If you do, what breeds? Do you know of anyone who sells them locally? ( I am just East of Sacramento) I have been doing some research and I may give it a try..

@Lotsapaints , Denny Thomas, in Paso Robles has Midget Whites. She is coming to the party in May & doing the demo on sprouted grains.

I have Royal Palms from her & the 3 hens just started laying. I do wish they would do that in the nice big lug box nest box I filled with shavings for them though......LOL

I agree with you! My late hubby and I looked at 100 acres once! He looked at me and said what do we do with it? I said live, plant, and graze in 10 and let the rest of it allow us to have some peace and quiet! Oh and a dirt track way over there for you! Someone else bought it, but it is fun to think about....now 10 acres with a 30 acre buffer would be great!

I would love some land that is just permanent pasture. I drool over every green field that I see. Have I mentioned that my goal in life when I was a little girl growing up in a small farming community in Iowa was to be a farmer? Some of my adult children just don't understand it.

The farm where my breeding chickens are has turkeys running all over the place. My friend says that they are laying eggs and I'm guessing will be hatching some soon. I can't remember what kind they are but I can find out. They processed some last fall for Thanksgiving. She said that they were excellent!

Edited to add, doesn't Deb have turkeys? She should be back in country some time soon and she is East of Sac, isn't she?

Very handsome boy! The feedstore I go to recently purchased a bunch of Call ducks and is now breeding them... definetly *not* a real breeder, lol, but they try.

Good Call ducks are extremely difficult to reproduce.....big Call ducks with long bills are pretty easy to reproduce. For some reason the hatchery type Calls don't have the same personality of the exhibition Calls either and the personality of the Calls is what people love.

I do! I do! I think all the camping all over the western US did it for me! All the beautiful green alfalfa fields! That and my parents wanting land when they retired! They started out wanting a huge spread...then 10 acres... well then maybe 5....land was hard to find around the small town they retired too! They finally ended up with 2. They squeezed a lot on there and mom got her huge garden and her very large chicken coop! But I too go ga ga over a nice green pasture! Especially if it has a rustic fence around it! Kindered spirits!

She has the blue egg shell gene and it is dominant. most of the eggs will be Olive colored but a small percentage could be dark brown.

I have two pullets from a Black EE and a FBCM Roo. Lovely eggs and Hens.

I have 2 second generation OEs from a FBCM roo over FBCM/ Blk Ameraucana hens. One lays ever changing olive/khaki eggs and the other lays a dark brown Marans egg. The olive layer has a pea comb and the dark brown layer has a straight comb. I love having both!
