Hello Hello Hello!

How is everyone doing? Long time no chat. I took a break for a little while as I was inundated with life. Now I am over 3000 posts behind. I don't think I can catch up with that. BUT I will do a few pages this weekend.

Just wanted to say, "hi" and I noticed that people were talking about chickens! Go figure!

Anyway I will post more later. I am, believe it or not, still struggling with my one chicken that had vent gleet. She got better and then 6 days after I put her back out with the flock it was back like it was never gone. I have tried everything (for a month now mind you) and I think it is time......:( I can't do it but maybe I can convince my ex father in law to help me.......UGH!

I am also going to downsize. I have noticed that I am giving away all my eggs to friends and co-workers and spending a pile on food, shavings and everything else. Not so smart on my part, so I think I am going to try going down to 6 chickens.

Anyone looking for some big beautiful Black Orps from Just Struttin? I think I am going to rehome one of the Millie Fleur Leghorns and maybe my Orange Polish...... sigh.... that only gets me down to 8 though, oh and the splash DLBB.

If anyone is looking for some lovely 11 months old girls that are laying well, let me know.

I will catch up with everyone this weekend! I have to run get my daughter now. Can't wait to see Ron's babies and what has been going on here...... I feel like I lost touch with my friends.

Welcome back!

It is nice to talk chickens again!

I have one Del and one Dorking out. Another Del is almost out and I see a pip in another.

I will get pictures when I can.

Nice to have you back.
To catch you up, the last 3000 posts are all about chickens.

Oh I'd love some of her Black Orps, but I'm upsizing when I should be downsizing.

If you have a FB, post on there pics of your eggs and birds. I have so many friends wanting them, it borders on harassment.

Even these nice little 80 year old ladies are getting a little pushy, lol!
Let them run out a little and when they ask for more tell them you'll have to charge a little for them . I'm sure they'll understand.
Maybe even next time you hand them out say "Here are some eggs for you. I'm not sure how long I'll have enough to go around. I'm downsizing because I just don't need extra eggs, and feed is expensive. That or I'll have to start charging for eggs." You can see what they say. And figure what you want for them before they ask. You don't want to ask too low.

Hello Hello Hello!
Ali!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So happy to see that white chicken portrait and to read that you are doing well. I sell eggs now too. I went FB, undercut Safeway's "Cage Free" by 50cents a dozen and had more people than I could sell to within the day.

Any way look forward to seeing your posts again...Sorry about your girl with vent gleet. If we lived closer I would help you out. I haven't done the killing part yet but I did participate in the processing of my 3 cockerels that I hatched in Oct. Good luck hope your X FIL comes through for you.

I am super excited about how well you are doing with the Del hatches. I should have room in the fall to add a couple of Kim's culls if she has them. Hope to hatch a bunch of Ozzie and Harriet's babies this year too but...I want to keep improving my Dels.

Thanks, Walt! What a beautiful mini-duck. Calls are so adorable!
I understand they're very friendly and make great pets.

I didn't realize they were so fragile as ducklings - that explains why I was having a hard time finding any. And it's early in the year. I recall you saying something about waiting till late spring before hatching bantam breeds, because they tended to be smaller if they were hatched later.

I did find someone in Iowa who has adult calls. They look like really nice birds:

Maybe I'll get a pair from him.

Welcome back I have often thought of you esp when I drive over 175. Like everyone else I hope that your husband is doong wonderfully now. Do you have BBS? I don't have ducks. Good Luck I hope you find some.

Lol! Yeah, 175 is a fun road - but not if you're in a hurry! Thanks for the kind thoughts.
I don't have any BBS. I do have some black and barred LF cochins - one rooster is nice enough, I think I'll enter him in the Sonoma County fair this year. Ya never know, somebody else might think he's nice too.
I'm still puttering along with my Araucanas, but I'm a long way from show quality there. I only have one that has decent shape, and only one with tufts. Unfortunately, they're not the same chicken.
And my Buckeyes were brought to a screeching halt by a fox. The fox pelt is now on the wall, but she took out all of them except for one lonely Buckeye rooster. I'll get some more eggs & start over. I really like the Buckeyes!

Thanks ladies.....Call ducks may be louder than a roosters crow...I'm pretty sure they are......and it is the females in this case. Driving to a show in the middle of the night and having the Calls all of a sudden go off is quite thrilling if you don't expect it. Yup, it is survival of the fittest here. It was very difficult in the beginning, but well worth it after a bit. Birds pretty much die of old age here. I have a white Call duck that is 16 years old and some China geese that are over 20 years old and still producing.

Walt

um - so no call ducks for people with a heart condition?
I can see the autopsy report now. Cause of death: quacking ducks.

They are decent Calls better than average, and will look a lot better in your hands.

Walt

Thanks, Karen - I don't know if you remember, but we met a few years ago at a class that Walt taught in Santa Rosa. It was a lot of fun!

if you are driving for hours in the dark without any sounds it's pretty awesome when they go off. They have that staccato quack. They were used as live decoys. They were bred for their voice.
