Welcome back!

It is nice to talk chickens again!

I have one Del and one Dorking out. Another Del is almost out and I see a pip in another.

I will get pictures when I can.

It is funny I get on here and think....eh.... 12 birds isn't bad. I guess it is all relative.

Wb! We missed you. I'd help with an orph but I think I'm too far away. I bet you will have a line of excited people!!
Well if I can't find any takers I may deliver if I am down that way. (and pick up some quail eggs!!) You only want one?????!!!! They are so pretty and big. You can tell they come from Mr. T, and they are like chips...... you can't have just one.

Nice to have you back.
To catch you up, the last 3000 posts are all about chickens.

Oh I'd love some of her Black Orps, but I'm upsizing when I should be downsizing.

If you have a FB, post on there pics of your eggs and birds. I have so many friends wanting them, it borders on harassment.

Even these nice little 80 year old ladies are getting a little pushy, lol!
Let them run out a little and when they ask for more tell them you'll have to charge a little for them . I'm sure they'll understand.
Maybe even next time you hand them out say "Here are some eggs for you. I'm not sure how long I'll have enough to go around. I'm downsizing because I just don't need extra eggs, and feed is expensive. That or I'll have to start charging for eggs." You can see what they say. And figure what you want for them before they ask. You don't want to ask too low.
What is the FB thing I am missing? I figured I wouldn't want to advertise it because it is illegal to sell your own eggs right? Why put a sign up on my forehead that says, "go ahead, give me a fine....I am selling my own eggs because I am rich and have a pile of money to pay a fine."

Ali!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So happy to see that white chicken portrait and to read that you are doing well. I sell eggs now too. I went FB, undercut Safeway's "Cage Free" by 50cents a dozen and had more people than I could sell to within the day.

Any way look forward to seeing your posts again...Sorry about your girl with vent gleet. If we lived closer I would help you out. I haven't done the killing part yet but I did participate in the processing of my 3 cockerels that I hatched in Oct. Good luck hope your X FIL comes through for you.
That white chicken portrait is my Alien Chicken picture.....Don't go into the light! She was so curious of my camera I couldn't get anything but overexposed pictures of her.

I wished you lived closer too.

My FIL uses the ole foot on the head and ax method I think. That is NOT the ideal way I want to dispose of my quasi pet. Maybe he will at least do it at night for me. You know when they are kind of spacey anyway and can't see it coming. (I am such a whimp)

OH and I called my local vet that does check chickens, and their office visit was $70 and $200 for testing! Ummmmm thanks and I love my chicken and all...... but it is a Chicken! Can't you have reasonable chicken rates????

LOL!!!! Sounds like you are encouraging people to be Egg Dealers..."the first ones are always free"...

It is all encouragement around here. Was it Chickens that are the gateway livestock? Or was it goats? I can't remember.

Big news to those of you in the E SF Bay area, specifically Contra Costa County. Concord Feed on Hookston has King Freedom GMO free feed!!!! Finally! I was just there and they have Freedom Chick starter, Layer pellets, and Layer crumbles. They also have a chicken scratch but I didn't look to see what was in it. I thanked them for carrying it and purchased 3 bags of it.
I wish someone up here would carry it. Western Feed is never going to. I have had the sales rep for the area deliver some to me when she is up this way trying to get some of the other local feed stores to carry it. She had a trunk full of feed that she brought from a store in Lodi for people up my way that want it but can't get it!

Now that is service! Personal delivery. It is such a good product. It smells good, like real food and has actual green specs in it. I didn't realize it had probiotics in it too until she told me.

It smells really good, IMO! I still have the bags in the back seat of my car. (The trunk is loaded with little kids plastic hangers which is a different story!) We got in the car this evening and Monet wrinkled her nose and said, "The car smells like chicken feed." My comment back was, "I think that it smells good!"

Okay, I changed out the pine shavings in my chicken coop about a week ago, and unfortunately this is where the hens have to spend all their time as the run isn't complete yet (the coop gets moved tomorrow and run should be set up this weekend)...and looking in there today I noticed that I see no solid feces, even though there should be some visible after a week of them being stuck in the coop. I let them out into the dog run today and when I see them poop on the concrete(because that's their favorite spot to poop!) it seems to be very watery...None of the feces are solid, even though they've had plenty of food, are eating well and acting normal. I don't know what's going on. Any ideas?

Anyone?

That is a sign of parasites so check for lice and mites. How are there back ends? Vents clear, sticky stuff on the feathers.

If you do not test for worms(It's called a fecal float test) then many sources say to worm each season. That is up to you though.

I think, and it seems like a good idea, to worm them as pullets before they start laying to make sure the worms do not hurt the hens reproductive system.

Of course it could also be because of a diet change--too much treats?

That is good news! The store in Dublin said they won't carry it because the store in Livermore does. I went to Livermore and the only thing they sell is chick scratch? Hmmmm...I asked if they were going to carry more of the line and he said no because layers was easier to have delivered. Again I went hmmmm... so I guess I'll have to head out to the store on Hookston and buy some bags! Thanks for spreading the news!

Sometimes I think that they don't know what they are talking about. They had 4 ft high stacks of each kind in the store today. But I usually pay for the feed then drive through the warehouse and have the guys load it into the car. I told the cashier what I wanted and when I asked for the Freedom starter feed, he told me that they didn't have any. I said that there was a whole stack of it right there on the floor. He looked again and said, "Oh, I guess it's listed under something else." Interpreted to mean, he didn't look in the correct place on the computer. If I didn't know that they had it, I wouldn't have been able to buy any because of cashier error. I guess the lesson to learn from this is to ask them to double check when they tell you they don't have it.
