I bought a hova bator 1602N
and man that thing is all over the board as far as the temp i am going to try to rig up the stc-1000 temp controller to it and remove the wafer,
i likeits size and te automatic egg turner if not ill have to use the stc-1000 on my homemade icechest incubator

If you are able to do this successfully I would love a little tutorial. I had to but my really old Hovabator (too old to have a model #-instuctions are from 1993) back into service because the Genesis I ordered from GQF last Wednesday did not actually go out until yesterday even though I received tracking info on Friday. I don't know if it would have even gone out Monday if I had not called them again (GEEZ!!) The eggs I had to set would have been no good by Friday so I fired it up and got them set yesterday. I will transfer them as soon as the Genesis gets here ans stabilizes. The old one has the wafer and is a still air, but I hat to throw it out. I am a bit challenges about retrofitting, especially if it is with parts not designed for the incubator.

Depending on the age, two hours of cooling should not hurt them. Be careful though, too much jarring is bad for eggs during the first week. They are much tougher after that. the problem with a heat pad would be if the egg went up to the lethal range over 104 degrees.

It will be interesting to see if they started incubating close enough to hatch under a broody.

Yeah I thought of that too. Maybe just having them on the floor of the car with the heater going will be sufficient? I have foam egg shippers should I use those instead of the carton? I am tempted to toss them all and start fresh but would really love to hatch a silkie. I guess I will just wait and see what is going on before deciding what to do next.

My contact says there are no chicks yet. I need suggestions for how to transport her and the eggs securely home...about 2 hours...

A week ago there were four eggs, now she says there are "Lots" so I have no idea what is really going on. My thought would be to bring the eggs all home in a carton that would be kept warm with a heat pack or something or I could leave them all under her in a dog crate and candle when I got home to see what is what. I could easily gather eggs for her from my girls if none of the silkie eggs are viable. What would you do??

yes, silver campines -- Franklin is VERY loud but crows at a much higher pitch than my marans or isbar cockerels -- rather annoying, especially if you're right nearby. ouch!

I read an article yesterday about chicks that are BOTH sexes, male and females cells, was very very interesting! And Franklin is a brother from another mother to dear Orlando I guess, lol!

just about a year -- the sister has been laying since january, quite regularly. i don't see any sign of spurs, but her comb is more than twice the size of her sister's, and doesn't flop over -- even Franklin's comb flops more than hers! she doesn't crow, though (although both she & her sister complain loudly when they are in their pen, they would SO prefer to free-range all the time!) -- just doesn't lay eggs, either. she's kind of in-between.

i figure, if there are people (which there are) who end up with three sex chromosomes instead of two, perhaps the same can happen in a chicken?

just checked: i got them in june, two pullets from Shannon at Die Fly Ranch, who was selling off her breeding flock of campines (needing to focus on fewer breeds), and they were approx. 8 weeks old -- so, they should be just about a year old now. here's a picture of them from back then, I'd had them for about a week:

Saddle shaped air sacks from shipped eggs. Day 9. Any tricks to improve hatch rates?
I let them be still as long as possible before turning. I think 5 days.
Brabanter eggs - we'd love to have them hatch!

IM not sure, but someone just hatched 5/8 shipped eggs with saddle shaped air cells from me, so it can be done. I was SHOCKED

HUZZAH! I would do this at night or dark if you can, otherwise cover her and the area with a sheet, put her in a dark dog crate with shavings on the bottom and straw on top, and just put her in with ALL the eggs. Then candle later. Keep the dog crate covered all the way home. I would not try that with others, but a broody silkie wont worry too much if you move her. but keep the crate LOCKED with food and water in it when you get home, and supervise her getting out for broody poo for 3 days.

Oh and there is another slikie girl I can get at the same time. I am balancing my girl's eventual need for a friend with her current need to have a place to quietly hatch and rear chicks. Should I get the other girl or should I wait and see on that, lining something up between now and whenever she is out of mama mode?

YES! get her. If you cant keep her ill ninja her, Peaches just became necterines this week, I need to aquire 3-5 silkie/showgirl hens to get my numbers back in kilter.. i'm looking at YOU deb!

I used to foster for Border Collie Rescue of Northern California(great rescue. I now foster dogs for a different rescue since BCRNC no long has foster homes north of Stockton) and today I got a package in the mail from the president of the rescue...she sent me a giant stuffed chicken. I love it...made my day!!

Yes, the foam egg shippers on the floor but don't crank the heater too much and don't put the heat directly on them.
It sounds like a great adventure!
