How many nesting boxes should I have for a flock of 6 to 10 hens 2-4 breeds. Ill they should be laying hens only do not plan to raise chicks "yet". When I do will probably isolate the breeding hens.

Lol...You can give them however many you want but chances are that they're all going to "fight" over one nest box :) I have a large community nest box, big enough for 4 or 5 hens to sit in at one time, but they will all only lay in the right side and heaven forbid two hens need to lay an egg at once! I looked into the nest box a couple weeks ago and my Light Brahma was sitting on top of my Andalusian because they both wanted to lay an egg in the same spot at the same time.

Crazy birds!

X2, but my two hatchery blue Cochin pullets so far are good layers of a pretty golden brown egg. I bought them last year because I had a lone chick that needed friends. Now I am looking for homes for them. They are listed in the BYC Buy~Sell~Trade section.

I'm about a month out from having the space to house any more chickens and the relatives will have to prep yards and coops as well so chicks are all I can deal with now.

I'm working on a wooden box brooder for the chicks about 6 feet long and 20-24 inches wide how deep should I make it. The general plan is to be able to section it off inside. and have wire floor on top of a removable board floor so I can drain out bedding to clean it easily. It will have a hardware cloth lid for when they start to become escape artists. The plan is to have them in this box till they are big enough to introduce to the flock.

They are very pretty looking chickens!

Laying eggs well is one thing that hatchery chickens are very good at.

Here are 2 chick pics - they are both supposed to be Chocolate Orps -
can they have this kind of variation?
i have 4 like this (with the bars)

I have 2 like this (no bars)
These guys have a different body shape & mannerisms than the Lemon Cuckoo & Jubilee - slimmer, more active.

The Jubilee have neat winglets already

The Lemon Cuckoos have a little variation too - one very light (top of pic) & one more golden (with its head over the light one)

Nope, that's not a chocolate, do they have chocolate barred? Anyway, that's a barred chick and I'd say pullet.

I had a chocolate Orp hatch out yesterday, along with three Jubilees.

Erm - eggs were all labeled Chocolate. That's what I paid for too.
No idea if chocolate barred is possible. Breeder does not show any barred orps or barred rocks or barred anything in flock.
Could they be cuckoo orps?
I thought there was some definite difference in fluff pattern at hatch but since this is my first experience...
I'll continue to track their progress & maybe get more pics of all the chocolate chicks together.

I hope no one takes this as bashing the breeder. Chickens can be sneaky & naughty plus this breeder's been very nice, easy to work with, & generous so far.
