The new girls are now in the quarantine pen, which is much roomier than the play pen! 30 sq. feet as opposed to 6ish. The pen is attached to the chain link fence, which has a solid 8 ft fence a couple of inches away. Not enough room for anything dangerous to get in, plenty of room for ferns. It took a bit of running around to actually get these photos...

Didn't have any fake eggs, so I used a real one!

Oops, that doesn't mess up quarantine, does it?

Much simpler once they found the waterer

Yesterday's green egg in comparison to our others.

Congratulations!

They will be very happy. It is great to see them safe at your place too.

When I was in High School, I named all my show animals (hogs and dairy heifers) after ex-girlfriends. It was a little awkward when Belle (the ex-gf) read the stall card of my 1400 lb Holstein heifer at the county fair....
I always had way too many to name. I name the dogs and cats, but I have well over 75 finches and have hat close to 200 at times. I have a hard enough time thinking of a few names for the dogs and cats.

I always name my chickens: Dinner, Lunch, Parmesan, Noodle, Dumplings, Snack...

Ok - final hatch numbers:

Hen 1 (cuckoo marans): 12 eggs set - 2 disappeared - 2 never developed at all - 1 hatched & then died - 7 chicks doing great: 2 bresse, 2 showgirls (1 tan & 1 dark gray), 3 silkies
- I can't get any decent pictures with Psycho Ninja Chicken Mom on guard duty
Hen 2 (Partridge silkie): 12 eggs set - 1 never developed - 1 chick failed to hatch (saddle-shaped air cell) - 10 chicks doing great: 8 silkies, 2 showgirls - pics below
The 2 showgirls under the silkie - the yellow one's got a good bow-tie

Here they all are - such a variety of colors, can't wait to see how the feather out

This is the one that didn't survive under Hen 1 (a white silkie, i think):
700

This the one with the saddle-shaped air cell (a partridge-looking showgirl - bummer):

Nice babies!!
:yuckyuck lol I had lots of interested people the 2 times that I shipped live birds. Yours would be the exact opposite. :)
yes I agree! I asked uc Davis what should I say if I'm asked what's in the box. They said while it's perfectly legal to ship dead birds, not all fed ex employees know that. They suggested I try not to inform them because everyone will panic. Thus delaying the shipment a few days

So what is the hatch rate of saddle shaped air cells? I know to hatch them in cartons, but curious on the hatch rate?

At this point I'm 98% Sure that both of my Marans chicks are boys. They are 4 weeks old now, and they are supposed to be Cuckoo Marans, but they don't look like them from the pictures I've seen. The one on the left has mostly black wing feathers, but a couple of them are white. The one on the right has orange feathers growing in on his chest and some orange-ish speckles on the ends of his wing feathers. Any ideas?
