California - Northern

Does anyone have seasonal broodies? Sounds silly, I know, but I have this one hen who goes broody every year, the same month without fail. Right before the fair.

She's a ridiculous broody.

The description I read for Dorkings said that they were profuse layers in the spring to Summer and had a tendency to go broody in the Fall. That seems very natural to me.

I think there would be a tendency for most breeds that did not have Broodiness bred out of them to go broody towards the end of spring. That way there would be plenty of food for the chicks to get big on before winter.

All bets are off for Silkies and Cochins though....

What cute names! Do you still have them? I want some OEGBs. I especially like the fawn color because you don't see many of those.
Miss Ickle was the first one we lost. Went out one morning and she was dead in the corner of the run. I think it was internal laying that took Cupcake, her eating improved when I brought her in the house where it was warmer but she passed the third night.
We have a fawn SDW OEGB also, typical hatchery bird, twice the size she should be and off color.

OkOKI had a ????....... Day today.

I'm out looking to/see if floppy is hiding her eggs because I'm low for an order and I have not seen her egg in 3 days. I saw a pile of feathers under the daeck and become alarmed. No body so I figure its just a weird thing and continue to look for eggs. No luck so I go to gather turkey eggs and see a more feathers on the stairs leading down to the gazebo and follow them up to pumpkins nest. She sees me and jumps up.

She has a clump of feathers and then... Her entire Brest is exposed!! I go to grab her and she is running around like a loon. When I finally corner her she has torn an Lshaped hole in her skin exposing her crop her muscle.... Everything. W...t.....h.......

My vet friend called for something else as I came in and rushed over. Pumpkins took an hour of stitching.how can you lay an egg when you need an hour of stitching?

I don't know if fowl run into disasters more then mamels or if the number of chickens makes more disasters per hour owned. But man they keep coming.

Quote: Ohh, they are doing wonderful! such joys to have.. All are busy growing their cheeks and beards, and their colours are simply gorgeous. For 9 wk. old chicks, they are quite nice size. I have been taking your chicks' photos once a week to see their development. Last week, I transferred them to the large cage in the chicken house, but they were terrified; had to bring them right back into my studio. I mean; they were standing right by the cage door, lined up right next to each other, making the saddest, loudest chirps and trying to jump out when ever they took a glimpse of me. Well, at this point, I have no idea when they will be moved back out again : )

Thank you! Yes, the whites of her eyes are blue gray, which I believe will change when she matures. All 4 chicks have the biggest eyes. You are correct, they are Ameraucana, who were bred and hatched by "Chickee". Lual

@Ali707 Boooooo on Texas! Is it for your company? I am really sorry that you will be moving somwhere that is not your cup of tea. I hear nice things about San Antonio and about Austin. Hopefully you will be close enough to visit those spots. The worlds largest water park is outside of SA it is called Schlitterbahn (sp) and it is on my bucket list.

Looks like you already have good leads on homes for your girls and your mealworms.

If you have time to check in don't let the Northern California label stop you

Hey there....No, I am actually moving because my Ex is moving there and I think it is important for my daughter to have both of her parents close by.

I am starting to get a little worried though. I think Tex-*** (hehe) is prone to have quite a bit of the "Good Ole Boys Club" in business, and since I have lived 90% of my life in CA, I am not certain how that is going to go over. California is a bit more progressive in a lot of ways, and I have a big mouth. So it wouldn't probably be a good combination.

It would be over to the Houston area. I have my priorities however; and am researching the heat hardy breeds so I know what I can have when I get there and get settled.

I won't be leaving the Northern California thread no way. There are too many valuable, genuinely nice people on this thread. Other threads can be scary mean!
