hrm.. that might be worth a drive, how much is the feed normally do you remember?
I just bought a couple bags of King Freedom starter feed on Monday at Concord Feed. It was $24.49 for the 50 lb bag. The layer pellets are a couple dollars less, I think. 20% off will make it $19.59 for a bag of starter.

Speaking of sick chickens...My 4 Cornish X meat birds finally souns like they are getting over whatever respiratory thing they were going thru. There is one that still sounds little congested. They have been going from a brooder in the shed at night to a small pen outside in the grass during the day. They have not been in direct contact with the rest of my flock. Will it be safe to let them out together once the last one is no longer symptomatic? If not, is it safe to let them forage in the same area, but not together?
Anyone???

My pullet died last night :( I'm sending her in, you never know. But I inspected poop this morning and everyone seems fine. I am worried about giving corid in the water right now because both ducks are in the main coop sitting on eggs and corid is not great for them since the need more bs and drink insane amounts of water.

This episode made me think I might get some liquid corid for emergencies, you can give it straight in emergencies right? or is it like liquid aspirin too toxic and cant be given that way?

Pumpkins is a trooper and adopted 10 duck eggs to her pile last night. My vet friend brought eggs down from so cal .. a LOT of eggs! So with those 90 eggs in the incubator the magic Dicky is getting full! I'M hoping I don't randomly get 200 eggs in the mail this week, that would be tricky.. ( DON'T ask..)
S sorry Shantih,
You are setting an insane amount of eggs. I was thinking of ducks again....Spring Fever.......... has a hold on me. What ducks are you hatching?

Kathy said to give the liquid corid to them straight if they were very sick. It is not toxic at very high doses.

Sorry about your pullet...glad things look cleared up otherwise Is someone on the Cinco de Mayo Hatchalong egg bombing? (is that the word) I remember people sending unsolicited eggs to ppl last year.
So sorry that you lost her, chiqita.

The one I lost was a Pita Pinta/CL mix with a pea comb. She would have been a green egg layer! How long does liquid Corid last once it's been opened? I saw some at Concord Feed the other day and thought about getting it.

Wow! You are egg rich!!! I set a group of eggs last night that will be due to hatch mid May and then I'm going to take a break from hatching.

I am sorry for your little chick too. It is hard to loose a baby. I had the one all pipped and starting to zip. I picked it up to check it...it was under my broody...a couple of times and I think maybe I messed it up by doing that. I had to see if it was still cheeping and didn't know any other way. Anyway the next morning it was gone and so I went through the whole "Should I have helped it?" debate coupled with the "I think I may have killed it by picking it up" angst.
Anyone???
I don't know but I am sure when someone sees this and does know they will chime in.

Ron, so this recommendation is for amprolium/corrid. Do you know if it is the same for sulfadimethoxine? Unfortunately, it seems like the amprolium is not working well against the cocci that I have here but the S drug knocks it out. All the rest of the chicks seem fine today. This will be day 4 of treatment.
For the corid, are you using the 20% powder? Most do not make it strong enough and use a calculation based on pigs for dosage. Chickens are not pigs though.

The best that I can find and it was verified by dawg53 is to give them 1.5tsp per gallon for the treatment dose. My Corid notes say that most do not give them enough of a dose. You can even go much higher if needed.

1/2 tsp. per gallon will not work for bad cases. After the S medicine treatmen, go for 5 days at 1.5tsp per gallon for 5 days and then 7 days at 1/2 tsp

I had to dig out my bags to make sure that I'm giving the correct dose. I used a marker to write on the bags so I wouldn't have to remember it or look it up. For amprolium 20% powder, I dose 1 1/2 tsp/gal for treatment. For Sulfadimethoxine, I use 2 tsp/gal for bad cases and 1 tsp/gal for not as bad.

Please clarify this for me: After the S medicine treatment, go for 5 days at 1.5 tsp per gallon for 5 days and then 7 days at 1/2 tsp. Are you saying to give them amprolium/corid after the sulfadimethoxine or just keep giving them the S med in reduced amounts?

The S medicine will kill all the cocci but not build resistance. They corid will let them build resistance. Repeat the corid treatment every three weeks until they are 20 weeks old.

The corid notes I posted had a 1/3 tsp per gallon dose that was a preventative. You might want to try that with all new chicks if they die at your place. I do not do that because I have not had one die here--just get sick. the cocci here does not seem to be as bad as what is in your area.

It is tough to give advice when there are differences between places like this. What works for me will not work every where. Definitely keep the S medicine handy though.
