Does anyone here do rabbit meat?
I do not but grew up raising and processing rabbits. After having done chickens, rabbits are looking pretty easy! No feathers to pluck! I think it would traumatize my children though. I don't know why I worry about that. I was traumatized and I'm fine. Really, I'm fine. Really. Twitch. Twitch. fine I said.

Thanks for that. It was my suspicion but I could not find an article about it yet. I probably wasn't looking right. I know from the time I spent raising some pigeons that it is very difficult get what you want when breeding birds.

I was thinking a lot about this after I made my post and was also considering if I did cross some breeds like that what would I be hoping to get. (Besides the color)

This whole line of thinking seems to fill some deep seeded need in me though. I have wanted to get back into pigeons for years (Indian Fantails were what I was interested in) but the more Im learning about chickens the more I think I want to breed my own. (Not sure if I want to make the commitment to show quality yet but not out of the realm of possibility)

Moving to the country is sounding more appealing all the time.

there is sex link creation...which I am in to, Sex links are easy. They require only one step and generation. Then there is breed creation which requires more time attention and knowledge than I have. I do have a little project going but it is just for fun.

The S medicine will kill all the cocci but not build resistance. They corid will let them build resistance. Repeat the corid treatment every three weeks until they are 20 weeks old.

The corid notes I posted had a 1/3 tsp per gallon dose that was a preventative. You might want to try that with all new chicks if they die at your place. I do not do that because I have not had one die here--just get sick. the cocci here does not seem to be as bad as what is in your area.

It is tough to give advice when there are differences between places like this. What works for me will not work every where. Definitely keep the S medicine handy though.
Thank you, Ron! I don't have outbreaks in every group of chicks but when it happens, a few of them get it bad. It's interesting but the ones that seem to be affected this time are the Pita Pintas and the Pita Pinta mixes. None of the Langshans seem affected.

Quote: Liz that is a BR rooster (whom we no longer have) over a double tufted EE. We had several and only kept one. We think she's lovely. I like a yard full of oddballs to look at. I will be hatching some out later in the year. We'll see if she copies. If she does, I'll let you know. I'm now kicking myself for not keeping the male counterpart.

All this discussion about sex-linked chickens has my brain turning.

I have this gal - she's lovely. Nicer than the pictures depict - her muff is astounding. Nice green egg - pistachio colored.

Anyway. If I were to breed her to a blue Ameraucana - would the chicks be sex-linked? Girls blue and boys barred? Do I have that right? I have BBS Ameraucana chicks (8 wks) and I can just be sure and save a blue cockerel if this is the case. I just want to see it work. Chicken genetics are so fun and make a person feel a bit like the mad scientist. Bwhahaha
I think so. Blue and blue barred chicks would be in the hatch. But since she not a purebred hen I am not sure 100% how her mama's half might manifest itself. I think that the barring gene will prevail but I don't know enough to know that for sure.

She is lovely!

Funny, my mother and aunts grew up raising and eating rabbits too and they are also fine like that.............
That said, our four year old daughter is pretty game for eating some of our chickens. We haven't actually ate any yet, but we talk about it all the time. Soon we will be processing our extra roosters so we will see how she (and we) feel about it. I really figure it cant be anything a really good batch of fried chicken cant fix, she really loves fried chicken. I would rather her be able to raise and eat her own food, or at least know how, even if she may grow up "traumatized" and/or be a little odd to others (especially in this day and age).

Yeah and we want to do meat rabbits too, poor little girl.

Sorry but I just wanted to share my bantam babies. I sat in the coop and hung out with them yesterday. I am easily entertained.

I have been told that the silvers are girls and the golds are boys...hoping that is true.
