The helper part is the problem. DH is not a chicken enthusiast so I don't really want to ask him to help. He pretty much tolerates them. Maybe I will try to get them done early tomorrow before it gets hot. I dusted the coup and nest boxes when I changed the bedding last week, but will do it again since I am seeing bugs on them.

My step dad is picking up dust for me from the feed store. How do I dust a chicken?
Hold them upside down with one arm and against your body. Put a good amount on their butt and work your fingers backwards through the feathers to get it down in there. I like to do under each wing as well. (another hot spot) Warning: You will get dirty, plan on showering after.

Is the "Shake & Bake" method any easier?

Why do my hens have broken feathers on their backs? Only 2 of the 5 don't have broken feathers like in the photo below. They've been looking like this for a long time. I don't have a roo so I know that isn't what's causing it.
In the past, my head hen and her enforcers often jumped some of the other lower on the pecking order girls like a cock would. The result was broken back feathers just as if they had been mated. My poor Buff Brahma looked especially bad. Once Zorro established his dominance, all of that ended. Now that he is out at the farm, I wonder if Precious and her cronies will start doing this again?!
