permethrin is very non toxic to Animals. The Army used to soak soldiers in it to prevent bugs from getting them. The biggest problem is if they breath it. It is very toxic to the Bugs so it is a very odd and targeted poison.

I have been treating the coops and roosts with a diluted permethrin spray for a while not. It was recommended on California Chickens because you can spray the bottom of the roosts with it. The instructions say you can use it every two weeks in the coops. Mites live in the cracks in wood and come out at night to feed on the birds. If you can kill them in the cracks and stop them from crawling on the roosts, mites will not be as much of a problem.

Why am I feeling the urge to scratch now?    

I perm spray my coops once a month while everyone is outside. Its super fast but bedding can still be an issue. I try to do it on non bee days however.

yep the liquid is great for coops and roosts because it soaks into wood and seeps into cracks. I also like it because unlike the power it is less likely to be air born unless you walk right into the mist.

What spray do you have Deann?? I want to get it & add it to my arsenal.....LOL. Do you get the cylinder called poultry dust just at a place like Tractor supply? Years ago I had fleas in a flock of chickens & the county Ag advisor had me wait til they roosted & spray them with Sevin & spray their coop. Has anyone done that? I was shocked to be able to spray them like that.. Pretty soon I will need a bigger box in my cupboard for my medical supplies....LOL
My son has been my chicken helper for some time now & we started treating for mites/lice/whatever recently after a friend pointed out indication of leg mites. I have been interested in building a collection of recommended treatments for all things "chicken" ever since. Ron mentioned a few things from Amazon that I ordered immediately. Getting the help to get things done on a regular basis is my problem. I am not wanting to give up having my chickens yet but as we all know there is maintenance involved.......LOL

Does anyone here have Sicilian Buttercups or Cream Brabanter? Chicks, pullets, or a laying hen...I'm in Redding but can meet anywhere between Redding/Sacramento and am willing to meet partway for people further north than Redding.
I'm just in general looking for a striking, beautiful pullet to add to my collection and those two are the ones that have really struck me. I just love rare/unique breeds.
I have one space left in my flock before I hit the maximum of 10, I need something that's gorgeous!
