California - Northern

Does anyone here have Sicilian Buttercups or Cream Brabanter? Chicks, pullets, or a laying hen...I'm in Redding but can meet anywhere between Redding/Sacramento and am willing to meet partway for people further north than Redding.
I'm just in general looking for a striking, beautiful pullet to add to my collection and those two are the ones that have really struck me. I just love rare/unique breeds.
I have one space left in my flock before I hit the maximum of 10, I need something that's gorgeous! :)
I hope you find some!

the Cream Barbanter looks really interesting. Good luck.

Miss Molly on this board used to have brabanters. I don't know if she still has them and I haven't seen her in a long time. She lives in Newcastle, but still lists chickens for sale on Craigslist, I've seen her ads.

Is there a post or thread that details how best to deal with shipped eggs? I know Ron has the one in his sig, but I'd like to point someone to a post or a brief thread. :D I'm also interested as I'll be getting some pea eggs from PA on Tuesday.

I hate hate hate HATE dogs right now .-. They got in my room and knocked my incubator over out of 6 eggs i now have two that didnt crack ugh!!!!!

Oh no!!!! Stupid dogs! My dog is fascinated with the chicks. She keeps wanting to p[ay with them. She has learned to leave the ones under broodies alone for fear of getting flogged, but the new meat birds have become an obsession for her. I had to put up a baby gate to keep her away from them.

Quote: You might want to take a picture of him snooping around the next time (if there is a next time). He may be up to no good and if something does happen in the neighborhood a photo might be helpful.

Quote: I am hatching grocery store eggs right now...from SaveMart. 1 out and another pipped. Today is day 20. Do you have a full sized grocery store? If so they should have some fertile eggs. Do you have any neighbors with chickens that could set you up?

Quote: I went ahead and used the poultry dust this morning. I wanted to get them treated and already had that on hand. I started out with the intention of doing the "Shake & bake" method. I will NOT do that again! It was very hard to convince the girls to get in the bag and stay there. Then trying to shake the bag while keeping her head out of it was next to impossible!. I ended up just setting them on my supply storage box and putting the dust under each wing, around the vent, along the back and on the belly. I did discover that if you rub it in on the back the girls will raise their tail feathers for you...I guess they think the back scratching is foreplay. I got them all done...including the broody already raising chicks (will let the chicks get some dust from her) and the broody Wyandotte on fake eggs.

My grocery store eggs are hatching

so the Wyandotte may get some of the chicks to raise. I also dusted the coop and all the nest boxes.

Quote: I just used the powder for now....will look for the spray.....

Oooohh....pea chcisk sound like fun! You must post pictures when they hatch!

Have a question about roost space.

I have roughly a 4 foot per side cube (more like 3'8"" inertnally) and thinking of putting 2 levels of 2"x4" (large side flat) across one side of the coop like in ladder like fashion. How far from the top and how far apart should these roosts be. I have the Dels, Buff Orps and will have CLB eventually in the coop.

I also am curious about the nesting box. I made one 17" deep front to back 14" tall at the front(13" at the back) and 29" wide. Should I divide it or should I just leave it large like that.

Ill have pictures of the coop mid construction tonight.

One more question about the Door hole how big should that be.

Do you know how I can get ahold of her?

I agree. They're very rare, so I don't know if I'll be able to find one.

I found a Sicilian Buttercup from someone in Chico, but I never go down that way...Sigh. Anyone in Chico headed to Redding any time soon?

Regarding the nest box, I have a very large one and my hens like it. They all lay on one side of it, though. If you divide it, chances are they're still all going to fight over one nest box. Save yourself the trouble and leave it large LOL
