Finally got some response from Brinsea on the turning cradle. They first asked me form my name, address , phone, date of purchase and proof of purchase. I sent them that on the 19th, then they asked what it was "rubbing on"...(I had sent them a picture of the broken arm ans the debris that had accumulated from what I assumed was it rubbing on itself when it broke). I sent them my response that I had no idea what it was rubbing on, but assumed with all the debris that it must have rubbed on something. I told them it was working fine last time I checked the eggs, and was broken when I went in the next morning. That was also on the 19th. They finally replied this morning and are sending out a replacement motorized cradle end and a return label. I am to send back the broken one when the new one gets here. I am sure glad I registered it for the extra 2 years on the warranty!

It did!! I got it set up just a little before 11, and so far everything seems to be running perfectly. I'm waiting until about 8:30 tonight to set the eggs as the Trader Joe's eggs need to reach room temperature. It's an agonizing wait.
How exciting!

Hey guys, I'm new here but I'd like to say I live in martinez If anyone knows where that is!
Welcome!

and a wonderful thread with some awesome people!
Well, I didn't make it to Trader Joe's but I did find someone locally with fertile eggs. I got a mix of different breeds but they're all purebred, and all for $15 so I'm happy. I got:
5 Black Copper Marans
5 Welsummer
2 mixed color Marans
1 Olive Egger
1 Amerucana
2 Black Tail Japanese Bantams

And tomorrow morning I'm going to Trader Joe's to get fertile eggs as I didn't have time to get there this evening. How long do the refrigerated eggs need to sit on the counter for before they can be set in an incubator?
What a fun mix! please share progress

Sounds like you already got some, but I was going to mention that Papa's Poultry has been running egg specials on his facebook, some pretty nice breeds as low as a dollar an egg.

I also broke down and ordered the little bitty Brinsea Advance.

It's Spreading!

My incubator should be here in just a few hours, it's on the truck for delivery! Waiting until tonight or tomorrow morning to set eggs, I want to be sure it's working correctly and that I have it all figured out before I set eggs.
Which one did you get again?

Ok I can feel the symptoms coming on. Incubators? Ive been ignoring the talk for a while now. But now that I might have a line on a place to breed/grow out birds the subject has to be addressed.

I'm sure there is a value point at which the various features become more expensive than is practical.

Ive started reading the incubating thread here but there is a lot there.
And it begins...

Big excitement in the coop this week. The first little clutch of Seramas hatched!

5 hatched of 7 eggs set, shared between 2 hens.

An odd thing happened though. I accidentally removed one egg thinking it belonged to a Silkie. The egg sat on my counter overnight in temps that got down to 58º. The next morning my son noticed the egg was marked #2 Serama egg, so I though I'd put it back and see what happened. Surprisingly, 3 days later, it hatched! It was the biggest egg too, which is why I mistook it for the Silkie's egg.

I think it might be the larger of the yellow chicks. Would being chilled make a chick a bit "sticky"?

Another nest should hatch Saturday and a third nest next week.

This is our first time hatching. Sure it won't be the last. Think we are in BIG trouble here!

Super cute!

Ok, Seriously!!!! That is WAY to ADORABLE!!!

I will definitely share progress! Rest assured this thread will be spammed with pictures and questions of my journey in hatching. :)
I got the new Genesis 1588 with auto turner. I haven't even set eggs yet & I'm really happy with it!

Quote: Deb, that one is super small. Is it a micro? The little mottled chick in our group is the smallest. Very short legs and small feet compared to the others. Calling it Stumpy.

I'm so glad you are getting to hatch eggs. I will be looking forward to your posts and beautiful photos.

I can't get over how tiny bantam eggs are.
From left to right: Massive Trader Joe's egg, Tolbunt Polish egg, Japanese Bantam egg.

I can only imagine the size of the chick that's going to come out of these eggs. I have two of them, hopefully at least one will hatch!

Quote: Thanks Ron. Good info there. According to that, this chick was most likely to die from the chilling, given the late stage of development, but chicks that survive show no detrimental effects. Yay! Four of the hens are from cold hardy stock, bred and raised in gold country with no heat after leaving the brooder, so maybe this chick has good genes for the cold.

I was so happy to have broodies do the work so I would not have to worry about the power going out! Then dummy me went and took a good egg out of the nest and let it go cold the whole night. Gah! So very glad it hatched and relieved me of the guilt!
