You know a dozen eggs is not really a 12 step program.

Just admit you have a problem you know its the first step on the road to recovery.

The sooner you admit it the sooner you will just be able to accept it and tell people to shove off and "get their own box" (to steal a line from the cheez its commercials)

Can't be that bad the sell them over the counter, right?

I have popcorn in my Genesis!!!!

The Cots are hatching and, like before with the BobWhites there were none last night at bedtime and 17 out this morning at 7:00 AM. There are 39 eggs that made it to lockdown, but it is so hard to see anything with the spotted eggs.

I love all the different colors! Good think I enjoy seeing pictures and don't actually feel the need to HAVE quail

Big beautiful birds. The Magpie here the yellow billed one is the only bird that is indigenous to California. I was surprised to learn that. I have a library of bird books, an interest that my aunt & I share. We used to call each other regularly trying to identify a new bird one of us would see.

When we lived in the mountains we kept 2 or 3 big bird books out for reference at all times. We had some really fun ones! One place we lived had these lovely multi-trunked oaks and that side of the house had lots of big windows. We hung bird feeders from the oaks and had a great time identifying them. We also had quail in the Manzanita and a family of Fox out the Master bedroom, and a psychotic chipmunk with a radar piercing shriek at the crack of dawn and during nap time. The birds we enjoyed, the chipmunk - we wished to kill.

I personally think too many staggered hatches lowers your hatchability chances. The fewer times you mess with the incubator the better hatch you have. Of course there are a lot of variables. I found in the Brinsea cabinet my best staggered hatches came when I settled to weekly intervals when setting new eggs, but that was because I had 4 shelves & the rotation of eggs to the hatcher worked well for that. Of course that was after a lot of trial an error experimentation.

I'm working on getting my cabinet going and plan to use the 1588 Genesis for hatching. I have 2 styrafoam incys that I can use as hatchers. The Swedish Flower Hens are slower to come out than some others and I've found that hatching them with the Basque or CLB is a bad idea. I end up with 20 rowdy chicks holding the lids down on the ones trying to hatch. This way I'll be able to separate the slow ones out.

My body is rebelling against all the construction work today. Ouch.

I thought that looked like hard work! It must feel like such an accomplishment! We can hardly wait to settle in somewhere permanent (this place is a rental so all construction is temporary) and build a nice run of breeding pens. @juststruttin has the nicest set up I've ever seen. While we don't have old horse barns to make over, I think we can still use her ideas some. You should look at her website. Truly beautiful!

How do you guys refill the water trays in the Gensis 1588? I had to take out the turner/eggs because I couldn't see the trays otherwise. Since my table isn't big enough to hold both the Gensis AND the turner(just a small little table that it's setting on) I had to balance the turner on the edge of the Gensis, and that's a bit dangerous for the eggs. I don't want to have to do that again, but without taking out the turner I can't see how full the water tray is, even when shining a light in it.

I was told to use the fish tank hose - you know the air pipe stuff? I forget what it's called. Anyway it works like a charm. I just use hot water and aim it for my bowl in the corner. At lockdown I use a ceramic bowl (doubles as a heat sink) with a rag or sponge in it. When it dries out, I use the hose and point it at the bowl and refill it with hot water. A syringe is very handy in this case.

I have nothing nice to say about those trays. I use a cup with water until hatch and then either use sponge or a plate with water depending on my humidity requirements

See above comments. I scorn the trays as well. Don't even bother.

Hatchers are hatching away!!!

Swedish Flower Hens from the farm - our first batch

Also Cream Legbars (they are mighty little hatchers! Just poppin away) and EO Basque. The Basque are special because they are eggs from brand new layers. The cockerel died (of a heart attack) and I gathered the eggs for a week after he passed. Didn't expect much but 6 made it to lock down and so far 4 have hatched! I'm very happy about that. Tiny little things but they look sturdy enough.

Remind me that 20 in a Genesis is a good number. I keep having 30 at lock down and after about 15 chicks, there is no space except ON TOP of the eggs that are trying to open. I'm sure the chicks think that laying on their friends is somehow encouraging but I fail to see that it is in fact helpful.

Okay, thanks to the guys installing our solar panels my power has now been out for over half an hour. Are my eggs safe without power for 30-60 minutes, or do I need to go demand they turn the power back on?

Hoping to get some help.

Gave our BCM and SFH hatching eggs to our friends with young children for their experiment. They purchased an incubator and only one made it. It hatched Memorial Day. Kids understandably upset. Looking to find non hatchery chicks ASAP both to help this little one live but as companions for the longer term.

Anybody have non hatchery chicks available close enough in age??
