I did something I've never done before. Hans decided to come at me today and I had the feed bucket in my right hand. I somehow managed to get both his legs in my left hand and lifted him out upside down. I finished filling his feed and tucked him upside down on my hip and packed him around for awhile. Seems being hung upside down doesn't agree with him, he was just clucking and trying to feed me when I walked by.

I don't think I posted it in this thread, but just to 'test' my Brinsea (yeah, I'm already justifying hatches lol) I put in some TJ eggs, hoping to get a White Leghorn or two to add to my flock. Had some issues- temps shot up to 102 on day five, husband jostled it and cracked two eggs, but STILL some of these seem to be developing. I set seven eggs (marked L, E, G, H, O, R and N). H and O seem to be duds, no veins at all a week in. The other five have veins and little black eye spots, and just in the super quick candling (maybe ten seconds per egg) I definitely saw movement in G, R and N. Yay! I know it is too soon to fret over it, but I'm already stressing that if a cracked egg makes it to hatch the poor chick is going to try to pip through the wax I think I put on too thickly. ugh... we'll see.

Congrats! I only had 4 of 12 develop but my eggs were two weeks old. How old were yours when you set them? You can find the date on the egg carton, a three digit number.

@juststruttin
is the local CCL Expert--she has very nice ones. What some have done is take the three imports and work on getting them to the Standard they want for the US.

Chiqita has nice ones too.

Chiqita only has Orlando the wonder roo with the bullhorn that can be heard 2 miles down the creek. His crazy fertility is being wasted on hens that no longer lay its a crime.

If it gets there you can scrape most of the wax off when the humidity goes up.

I have been lazy and hatching in the dicky.
@juststruttin your right its crazy messy. I have been scrubbing it once a week.
@cappavalleychick not doing anything but putting some water in the hatching dividers all the chicks from home have hatched. I had to pop a few that got too big when humidity was 55% during incubation but its been fabu you should get a 2\2!!

Everyone said it would, and I looked up the date on the Julian calendar so I'd be prepared, but when I went on they only had a very small facing of fertile eggs, and the only date stamp I saw on the carton was the same as on the eggs "Use by June 27th". I dug to the back of the section, but they were all exactly the same. They were stamped nearly four weeks out, so I think they were pretty fresh.

Ok, good to know, I was just overly paranoid about bacteria getting in there.

Everyone says buff Orps go broody easily. Ive considered checking out TJs for fertile eggs just in case mine do that I can give some in a pinch. ( I know they are not likely to soon)

Ive been seeing the rooster collar person on FB lately. I'm not sure what to think of that any opinions?

I also asked a while ago but never got an answer What is the opinion of forced molt?

I'm very excited about new chicks soon to complete my backyard flock.

Now on to the process of getting breeding space. I think I may have found some.

I DO have room in the Bator. How amny do you have? And is there a way to sex the ones I have?

I just found Darla, one of my Speckled Sussex, dead in the nest box. Now I can't stop crying. She smells bad, so she must have died yesterday morning and I just didn't notice. Will someone please link me to the link in Kathy's signature, how to send a bird in for necropsy...
Oh no! I'm so sorry. You sure have been having a rough time lately. I am glad you are at least having good things happen in between...

Black Copper Marans chick

Olive Egger with "eyeliner"

The dog, obsessing.
How adorable! Looks like a blue Marans to me too. I really love the eyeliner girl!

Thank you Kaylish, looking at that picture it looks like this is definitely a blue. What do ya'll think? I have two that are this color.

This one almost looks too light for blue. Could it be splash?
So after yesterday's terrible heat : 4 Marans hens laid really small eggs.
Like when a pullet has been layin for 3-4 weeks. Haven't weighed them.
Anyone heard of that before? Heard of them stopping laying.
Mine are off laying almost completely. I got 1 egg today from 6 hens (one is raising chicks thought and another is trying to go broody)

So far I have: 5 hatched, 1 pipped, and 1 zipped.
Hatched is:
1 Black Tail White Japanese Bantam - sold
2 Blue Copper Marans - sold
1 Olive Egger - keeping for myself
1 Tolbunt Polish - might have a messed up leg/foot.

Zipped is another Marans, obviously I don't know the color yet. Kind of hoping for a Splash! That is one lively chick, that egg is wiggling and peeping very loud! Go chicky go, you can do it!!
And pipped is a Welsummer.
This is all so eggciting.

I can't stand it, I keep getting up to look in the incubator every 2 minutes lol!
Wow! You are doing great!!!

At 5 and 6 weeks old, I think both the chicks and I are ready for them to go outside. Unfortunately, the coop still needs its doors, but I should have it done by this weekend!

Because they seemed to be suffering from cabin fever, I took the chickies outside on the lawn in a puppy pen for a little bit this past weekend. At first they were unsure, but quickly got over it and were picking grass, chasing each other around, and generally seemed to enjoy the space. I was happy just to observe. Who needs to do chores when you have happy chickens to watch??

I also introduced a nipple waterer (assembled from a tip on here) and the girls took to it right away. I think they like to play with it more than actually being thirsty though...

Yup, I'm solidly obsessed.
Sounds like good motivation for you to get the doors on. I am setting up a nipple system for my meaties. I hope they don't make a mess....but they do with regular waterer anyway.

Anyone want to see a chick hatching? I don't think I'll ever grow tired of seeing this.
