Is anyone having any processing seminars soon? I have a few young ones, won't be ready for a couple months . Then I'll have a gazilion to process in about 4 months .
I heard that skinning is even easier.

Skinning is easier, it just peels off like a glove.

The biggest problem, the skin is my favorite part. I was just telling DH the other day, with all the skinless chicken parts sold, someone should sell skin. I'd buy it! LOL

After all, you can buy pork skin to make cracklings, why not chicken skin!

Question...what color is this chick going to be? Any ideas? I figured it would just be black but it's getting white on it's shoulders.
Its a Marans/EE cross.

Why is it that when you put out a feeder with 14 holes all 7 chicks decide they have to eat out of just 1. And there is that 1 chick who just has to stand on the feeder and disrupt everyone's meal.

This being the first time Ive had more than 4 chicks at any one time its amazing how much feed they can devour.

And apparently they would prefer that you just pile it on the floor so they can scratch around in it.

I had the cover off the first few days we had them because they were so little and they would empty the container in minutes (of course it was all on the floor) then in the middle of the night you would hear them digging to China going after the food they had scattered earlier.

And this bunch seems to really enjoy swimming in the waterer too. Its just a quart jar waterer but sometimes I find one or to sitting or standing in the water basin. Not so much lately since they have gotten bigger but Im sure they would do it if I gave them a big enough dish.

Im sure some math person could figure out based on the age and number of chicks the amount of food and the size of the space how fast they would poop up the litter. It seems it takes only a few hours with 7 little ones. Ill wait till they are 3 weeks old to move them to the big brooder in the garage. I think they should be able to reach and work the nipple water by then. (one is very low for chicks)

Its amazing that even at this age the breed characteristics ten to separate them quite a bit.

My Buffs and Dels outside are integrating pretty well now. I found them all under the coop in the shade all quite happy to be together. One of the buffs figured out about the coop roost after only one night. The other has needed help 2 nights in a row now. She comes to the coop door complaining that she wants to go to bed. So we pick her up and put her on the roost from the outside door. I think the Dels are getting closer to POL now. It seems about 9 am in the morning they all migrate back to the coop for a little bit like they are going to lay and mill around inside.
They have been "talking" a bit more around that time too. They come out a few minutes later and are back to normal routine.
