Never saw any animal protein listed on the ingredients for Calf Manna. I don't use GMO anymore so it's not even an option. The only animal proteins I use are no salt tuna or milk derived.

It has dried whey. Whey protein is from milk. Milk is an animal protein.

I would prefer GMO free too but it is expensive!

I posted this because there are probably some that read of will read this thread that do not know that whey protein is an animal protein. A person was reading a bread label in Walmart yesterday and said to her husband "It does not have Cholesterol" What? Do you know what Cholesterol is and why would it be in Bread? The same goes for Gluten. Many on Gluten free diets do not know what gluten is.

Thanks for the instructions for giving the flock vitamins and electrolytes today. It was very helpful and I gave you a thumbs up for it.

Gotcha. I just looked at the label from Manna Pro's site. It is the 5th ingredient listed. Brewer's yeast has an inferior nutrient profile to nutritional yeast, so I'd suggest nutritional yeast. Dried or liquid buttermilk, or a few cans of no salt tuna will supply that occasional animal protein of high quality at a much cheaper price than a bag of Manna Pro. I'd go easy on fish and milk since too high of levels can cause diarrhea/enteritis. I saw Manna Pro is also producing an organic layer and starter ration. 10 lbs for $16! I don't know anyone that would pay that. Their milk replacers all have ethoxyquin listed in their products. That preservative was banned from dog food since it was found to be linked to cancer.

Even regular feed is expensive nowadays!
Tractor supply had a purina bag. I want to say $17+- a dollar. Some areas I know it's &18.
Regular chick start was $20 in Livermore
If I drive to Modesto milling for organic feed is $22-$25 a bag depending on soy free etc
If I bought it at a feed store it's $34+
Crazy prices

I have about 20 Bantam Mixes ranging from 3 weeks to a couple of hours in Amador County, Ca. Free to good home. PM me if interested

I toss calf mana out instead of scratch. The Chickens eat it all.

If I put it in with the layer feed, they toss out the layer to eat the calf Mana.

Calf Mana has Animal protein in it. Some say protein is protein but there is a difference. It is the lowest cost way to get the supplements and animal protein to the flock. 50 pounds is on sale at TSC for $30.00. At the recommended ratio of feed to Calf-manna, that is not too expensive.
I toss it out as scratch as well. I tend to use calf manna in the winter when they are molting and need more vitamins for feather growth. I should do it all year, but it's so pricey! Good to know it's on sale right now, I'll check it out.

Quote: Same here.

Quote: My flock gets left over goats milk, plus any leftovers in the fridge. Yesterday they got some bread ends, goats milk, taco meat, refried beans (they go crazy for them), couscous and sprouted mung beans. They were happy campers. This morning they got more sprouted mung beans. Raw milk is great as it helps them with the good bacteria in their gut. (same with yogurt)

I looked at organic feed, it's $35 for a 40 or 50 lb bag. (don't remember the bag size)

And it still has soy in it. And almost all organic soy comes from China.
