Hi Northern California Friends!
I am a new chicken owner. We found our girl Annie living on a street corner in a bush about two weeks ago. I have been on here trying to figure out what breed she is. A few people have guessed that she is an Aseel, but feel free to give me suggestions if you think differently.

Oh she is so cute! And what a rainbow in her feathers. I like the Aseel guess or maybe Saipan? Not sure if they come in black & my hen looks heavier of body.

I've been stalking the threads for a while now and haven't been able to keep up nearly as well as you!

As to the heat, I am glad that I am living in the bay area and the temperatures are in the low 90's. But I still broke down and bought some misters for the girls.

The worst thing I have been battling is foxtails. Has anyone put in Bermuda grass? My father has said it is a really invasive grass that will help keep the foxtails down. Plus it is really good at being drought resistant. Any suggestions?

Look into St. Augustine (sp) grass; it spreads like Bermuda grass but has wide, round tipped blades. It did pretty good in the northern Sac valley and is supposed to do even better with some humidity (which we have none). And Welcome!

Today is lockdown! Just took the eggs out of the turner. All the EE eggs look very full with no room left for the chick to grow, however many of the Trader Joe's eggs still have a lot of room left in them, enough that I can still see movement in there. They were set the same day as the EE eggs, and today is day 18. One only looks half full but it's still moving! Are they going to hatch late? Will they still hatch? I'm worried

It was very hot.

It was about 112 here I installed new misters in the runs this morning, because the old ones weren't functional anymore. Chickens seemed to be pretty comfortable today with the help of the misters. My horse was a bit uncomfortable by late afternoon. So, I gave her a bath . The dogs then decided if the horse was getting sprayed with a hose then they should of course get wet too. I ended up smelling like wet horse and wet dog, LOL.

My herding-obsessed dog saw me messing with the eggs in the incubator(taking them out of the turner and letting them roll into hatching position)...she learned last hatch that when momma is messing with the incubator, there are chicks inside that MUST. BE. HERDED. Now she won't leave the incubator alone, she's just sitting there staring at it. Not even looking through the display window, but just sitting and staring at the side of it. She cracks me up.

Natural predators are a great thing to have. The snakes will help with rodents and etc. When we moved to our house in 1999, I bought a once a month for three months pack of beneficial insects. One of them was for Green Lacewings. Where did you order them from? I've had a hard time finding finding a local supplier.

Invasive is not usually a positive descriptor. I know people who use herbicides to try killing established Bermuda grass because you can't control where it invades and is a pain to pull up. My news : lost little runty today to some suburban of predator. She was more impacted by heat than her hatch mates and didn't always stick that close to them either. The other two were under the couch with the biggies looking a bit dazed, so I brought them all inside for a few hours during the worst of the heat - 104* today! Glad it will be cooler tomorrow!

I was surprised how much space it looked like my TJ eggs still had. They hatched out fine, plump, healthy and good-sized.

you people suck all the hatching going on and i cant even hatch one egg and none of my hens will brood.
any idea why my hens arent laying?
