@Chiquita ...here are the pictures of the 3 chicks that have hatched (There are still 2 Marans eggs that I hear tapping in...today is day 22) This first one is the one I'm not sure of the breed on. The egg was not marked. The Show Girl And the FBCM The Show Girl and Marans were both shrink wrapped and haven't really complete fluffed out yet. They were a bit sticky.
The yellow chick I would guess is a Bresse but @chiqita should confirm.

Aww...I'm so sorry.....

You are doing the right thing with such a severe injury. Have you been able to figure out what did it?
No, not for sure, but I suspect an opossum. We've had problems with them in the past, but usually just trying to break into animal feed or harassing the cat lady's cats next door. When she gets really bad about leaving out dishes of cat food the little gray monsters start showing up again. I noticed a little Buff Orpington from the same pen looking a little listless and looked her over very well. She had a small wound I didn't see last night, right below her ear. I hit it with Blu Kote, but it was already dry and scabbing a bit. I'm assuming it happened around the same time and I missed it. I looked very closely at all the other birds and didn't see any signs of any other wounds.

Your chicks are soooo cute!! I wish I could start hatching babies, but I am still working on research and seeing how my GLW's turn out before I start. The girls are only 9 weeks and have a little bit before they even give me eggs!

Here's the ugly/cuteness I was referring to earlier - this is one with no "bow-tie" (patch of fluff just above crop):

A roo, right?
From the comb and red leakage on the shoulders, you have a male.

I am beyond delighted that finally I have German New Hampshire chicks, and wanted to share my joy with you : ) All the chicks, and birds shown are the progeny of: "Walt Leonard-fowlman01" birds.

Gorgeous, congrats! I saw some of Walt's birds at the Stockton show.

The Pita Pintas are starting to hatch now. One is out and I have 5 with pips and one zipping!

Two of the OEs are out with one more pipped out of 4.

Partridge rocks are at two out. The last ones could be zips.
I can't wait to see the Partrige rocks!

I thought she had a chance, but that has changed. Spoilered for those who don't want to read about the full extent of the injury,

I'm getting the kids settled in and distracted and then I am going to cull her,
I'm so sorry you have to do this for her, but you are doing the right thing ending her pain.

Quote: It can be so hard to see wounds on them because of all the feathers. I sure hope the rest will be OK. Have you tried trapping whatever it is?

Quote: It is a lot fun hatching, but I am getting worn out from it. I have the last batch of BLRW in the incubator and will give them to my broody in a few days if she sticks...then I am done for the year.

Quote: 2 of the jubilee eggs did not develop...one developed and internally pipped, but did not hatch..

The last 2 Marans I though I heard pecking in last night were silent this morning. I opened the big end and they were dead with no internal pip. I must have been hearing things because there was still a lot of unabsorbed yolk in both.

But I have 3 healthy chicks and 2 quail babies, so I am very happy! I am quite enamoured with the showgirl.....

Oh...and did I tell you I gor my first eggs from the first batch of quail eggs you sent me? I also got a scalped A&M.....but they have been separated from the pharohs ans tuxes and doing well. I think the white coloring maked a good target. I thought that one might have lost an eye in the attck, but now that the swelling has gone down the eye looks fine. I am finishing up a breeder cage rack (just need to put wire on the 2 doors (ran out and need to buy more) and then they wll all have thier own quarters.

Congrats on the Quail eggs!

I will be hatching another batch of Pita Pintas and will be done for myself for a while. The Egg Farmer is supposed to start hatching Bresse so I should get my Arkansas Blues back soon.

Time to re arrange pens again.

Oh, and surprise chicks.

DH does all the feeding and chores (I know, I'm spoiled) so I don't necessarily look in all the coops. I was out at the chickens this morning and heard the chick distress call. I started looking around to narrow down the sound and standing at the top of the ladder in the Icelandic coop were two chicks calling "Mommy, come and save us!" I went into the coop to be the surrogate mommy and they ran down the ladder. That would have been fine until they poked through the fence next door into the Orpington pen where they got pecked. I saved them from them from there, then they ran next door in with the Cochins. Fortunately the behemoths in there ignored them. Then they ran through the next wire in with the Longcrowers, who also ignored them. They are now in a bin in the back bedroom with the call duckling that hatched a few days ago. I'll have to set something up for them with their mom.

Then I looked in the bantam BR coop, there are SIX broodies in various places on the coop floor, each with a huge pile of eggs!

The bantam black rock chicks are still happily cruising around the pen with dad, mom and aunt.

Dang chickens (or DH for not taking eggs away from broodies)!
