Oh my goodness they are just adorable, Ron! Thank you SO much for hatching these cuties in your incubator. I'm seriously thinking I need a Brinsea now!

Quote: They were shipped. I only got 2 from the previous batch I bought from him, but blamed it on the cradle arm breaking. There are 19 and only a couple look like there might be a slight possibility, but I am not holding out much hope for them either. They are due on the 28th
They are so cute!
Glad you are back! Hope you got the rat. Did you find the body? I caught about 10 in the electronic traps oever about a week...3 of them in one night. I had gone to be but couldn't sleep. I got up and there was one in the trap. I emptied and reset it. I checked it agan before I went back to bed and there was another. I emptied and reset it again anfd when I got up in the morning there was another! Finally got caught up on the thread.
I broke down and put out bait for the rats. Looks like I may have gotten my $600 rat. No more chewed water lines and only the 1 carcass after a week.
Jason, the new family member is precious! Toby is a very fitting name for that sweet face. I'm sure your family will show him the love he was missing before.
Chiquita, I found my first two eggs yesterday in the quail pen. I'm loving the added crowing outside the window. The single tux, a&m, and Tibetan that hatched are all boys, that's fine with me but when things cool down I may be interested I more eggs.
We have have almost two weeks of high 90's or 100°+. No bird losses but we are all miserable in this heat. It was 83° at 5:30 this morning.
The black copper color would be dominant I think. Might develop some faint lacing on the breast later on.My broody black copper Maran just hatched one of her eggs! A cute little black chick!...but.... The only rooster around is a splash laced red Wyandotte? Isn't the chick supposed to be blue?

If the door is open its not preditor proof . How much that matters depends on where you are.
For me any time I fudge it I loose chickens.
This may be a noob question, but here goes: should the pop door between my coop and secure run be opened/closed daily? Right now I'm opening it in the morning to let the girls out and closing them in at dusk. The coop and run has secured 1/2" hardware cloth on all sides, doors, vents, even under the floor wedged into the foundation.
This isn't so much of an issue when we are home, but we are going on a 10 day vacation in August, and I'm trying to determine what instructions to leave our friends who are gracious enough to take care of the chickies and our cats. We are in Alameda, so the weather is mild, if a bit breezy in the evening.
Thanks for the advice in advance!
Yes, the pop door should be closed at night and opened in the morning. It adds a layer of protection from night time predators.(I posted this in Bay Area, and realized I meant to do so here)
