California - Northern

Is it moving your way? Any evacuations in place?
not here but the are evacuating Swansboro do to the fire spreading up and down the canyon towards Slab Creek ( North Of Camino) and east sadly it looks like its almost to where the Cleveland Fire was in the East all the young trees they planted hopefully they make it

I sure hope everyone who can has defensible space. There are some places, like up around Tahoe, where they've outlawed clearing defensible space, but if you can do it, it's good to do. When the big fire happened down along 395 in Alpine and Mono Counties, there was a picture of a teacher's place where had good defensible space. Everything all around it was burned black - but the house, cars, grounds, and family were fine.

The fire also came into Douglas County Nevada; we were fortunate in that our Nevada house has defensible space.

That was the fire where the poor fire fighting plane crew was killed.

yes we try. its hard though as there are stressed trees everywhere and years worth of build up. the problem really is that it hasn't burned in so long. a healthy forest burns some lite fires burn under the trees. Fire suppression and you get a unhealthy forest the the fire burns much more likely into the trees and now has a mind of its own

Oh, yeah. It's a real problem. We went through our Nevada place and removed every shrub within 30' of the house, and thinned the ones out to 50' so they won't fire ladder.

I hope no trees come down on you folks up there. What I've seen on the news looks really bad.

The only good thing is that the USFS is finally getting past their Smoky the Bear complex. The fire suppression policies were building up so much fuel that it was appalling.

Our areas is set up like residential tract housing but with a little bigger lots. Most of it is pretty green, but we have a big field behind us. The guy who lives in the house back there is really great about keeping it mowed short from spring thru fall. I feel bad for the guy because it seems like he is out there every week or so. It is all supposed to be completed by 10 AM but it is often already very hot already by then

for me is the frustrating part is its burning into the area of the Cleveland Fire years ago. They replanted Giant Sequoias in there it has been nice seeing them grow over the years. hope some make it.
also it is burning down the canyon west which is not good

When I was a kid in the 1960s, we used to drive through the area of the Tillamook burn and sit in silence and look at how three decades after the fire it was still devastated because of the pH changes caused by the burn. When I went back through about 20 years ago, the area was unrecognizable as it had grown up beautifully.

Sometimes things don't get better in the lifetime of those who witnessed the tragedy.

I suggest that everyone pray, send good intentions, etc. I also suggest that people offer to take in those displaced or to foster their animals. If anyone can reach the Bay Area, I can foster a few poultry for a couple of weeks and a couple of people and one or two children for a night or two.
