California - Northern

I collected 6 eggs yesterday. I even scrambled two for breakfast.

People are still crying because I cannot get eggs to them though.

I am using Nutrena feather fixer layer pellets. It is working and they eat less of it than the other feed.
I've been looking at that Feather fixer stuff too. Glad to hear it's working well.

I'm down in eggs, but thankfully have 5 pullets that just started up and more close to laying.

Does anyone have experience fighting rooster complaints? I have a beautiful SQ Cochin roo that is very important to me and I suspect my neighbors will try to complain to the city about the crowing, even though he makes less noise than the neighborhood dogs.

I would love to hear about your experiences. :]

Are Roosters allowed in your community?

You can try a now crow collar. They work by making most roosters crow less and not as loud.

have I been doing something terrible to my boys all these years?!
Too much calcium can cause hypercalcemia in roosters. They can develop calcification of the soft tissues, such as the keideys and heart. Othere porblesm they can get include pancreatitis, egg binding, dry skin, appetite loss, lethargy, confusion, depression, slowed growth in pullets and cockerels, dehydration, diarrhea or constipation, and even death. They may not have problems until they are a couple of years old and the excess had built up in the system.

Quote: No...the roosters will not consume the oystershell. If the calcium is in the feed though, they will have no choice.

Quote: I don;t know of anyone who processes around here. Besides....if I had to pay someone else it wouldn't be cost effective for us.

I am so happy!

I am getting closer to getting the Arkansas Blue egg layers going again after they were messed up this year.

This pullet

laid and egg two days in a row. The first one was 48G

Yesterdays egg was even bluer in color.

Lalo at Farmer's says that quail chicks aren't very smart when it comes to keeping warm and he loses quite a few because they don't know they should get back under the lamp to stay warm. Still, I think it would be fun to try some experiments with a good broody.

I have never had any problems with mine staying under the lamp to keep warm. They do seem to have some issues when it comes to smarts though. I have 2 of the male Goldens that got out of the pen when I was feeding them a few days ago. I wasn't up to chasing them so I have let them stay out with the chickens. One of them was charging at a pullet this morning and the pullet just looked at it like: "Are you serious?"

Of course I will not be able to put them back in with the other quail now that they have been running around with the chickens, but I am planning to process a bunch in a week or so anyway..

So, the chicks are MIA. The last info for the tracking # shows they've been in Sacramento since 1:30AM and no one can update me on their status. Even though the tracking says guaranteed delivery by 3PM today, that's clearly not going to happen. I'm furious. I now have to take a second day off work and I have no idea what condition the chicks will arrive in. I certainly want a shipping refund from USPS. Guessig Jeff will have to handle that. *grrrrr*
