One of my buff orps(the laying one) is acting odd. She has taken to sleeping a good portion of the day. She is eating and drinking and when she is up acts fine. I've checked for lice and mites and found nothing. I dont know what to feel for on her body to tell if she is having egg problems. She is our lap chicken anyway and prefers to be held when we are out. I dont know if the changes in weather and light are affecting her differently. Im a little worried but if its not something I can do for her myself it will just have to run its course. She went to bed on the roost last night just fine.
Checking for an egg is easy... Put on glove, KY Jelly, *gently* insert finger and check for egg. If it's there it can usually be felt no more than an inch in. Be very gentle, sometimes they have soft ones, or ones still forming shells in the uterus. These pictures should help you visualize where an egg should be.

I do love the full frame sensor!! I am somewhat interested in taking a photography class at the college, but only somewhat. I like being self taught, I always question people teaching me an art thinking "is this science-based or just your opinion? Where is the evidence?!" I like being able to go online and compare the information between several credible sources. And I also don't know if I'll ever have room in my schedule for it. I will be taking American Sign Language until I'm fluent, which will be the full 2 years that I'm in Jr College. Maybe after I hit ASL 3, when it changes from 2 separate classes to one all-inclusive class I will have time for it. I don't know...not something I'm going to worry about though because I don't mind being self taught, and don't know if I'd enjoy a photography class. In a class it becomes more than just fun, it becomes work, and I don't think I want that.

LOL WET chickens! Are you in college now? I know what you mean about teaching "art" it's all subjective. You'd probably really like a portrait studio lighting class. That's more craft that and knowledge that would help in almost any situation rather than a subjective type of class. I'd say it's only work if you make it work. Kinda like chickens. Taking care of them can be just another chore or it can be fun! Personally, I don't enjoy shooting weddings very much and the editing is super monotonous. But, I love doing portraits!

Ugh. Didn't get to bed until 3am this morning, was too busy throwing up. I'm so hungry and want to eat plain spaghetti but don't want to upset my stomach. Ah, decisions decisions. Good thing I filled up the. Chickens food yesterday because I am not feeling well enough to go take care of them.
On the bright side, I dragged myself to the garage to check on the chicks and there's no more dead babies...

Got the pumpkin box set up and made a chicken wire lid for it. Just in time, too. The biggest chick was flinging itself at the tulle barrier I had on the wardrobe box all morning. Now it's busy roosting on the new bar.

Thank you so much, Ron!!! I'll back off and listen for the egg song and not worry her about it.
Happy rainy day!!

pullets are funny, chickens in general do not seem to like a lot of attention when it comes to laying.

It will be very exciting when you get those EE eggs. You never know what color they will be.

Post a picture of it for us Please.

How would you represent the egg song/alarm call in text? Y'see, I want to write an entry for this website I've been a member of for 13 years now ('tis where the "Paperlady" bit in my name comes from) about backyard chicken keeping, and I'd like to put a representation of the egg song in the intro. It's an english-language-only site, so everyone reading would be familiar with common sounds, though, since it's an international site (I've friends on 5 continents (no one that I know is in South America or Antarctica)) pronunciation is different all over. Though I suppose that doesn't really matter for nonsense words

According to my husband, there are two versions of the egg song. "b-b-b-b-b-b-BEEYAWK!" and "boc boc boc boc buh-GAWK!" The second is louder and goes on longer. In case you hadn't guessed, he finds the egg songs somewhat annoying. Those both come from a text sent when he was home alone with the kids, and multiple hens began to sing when he was ttrying to put the kids down for naps.

For those think about learning to tube feed, I thought you might find these pictures useful:

Some anatomy, tube and syringe pictures:

Aquarium air line can be used, but will need to be modified to make it safe (not sharp).

Remember that a bird must have it's hydration corrected before tubing food, so that means tubing warmed fluids first.
