California - Northern

This is a total subject change, but I'm getting ready to start building my coop and have looked everywhere (I live just south of Modesto)for 1/2" x 36" x 100' hardware cloth for a decent price. I found some at true value hardware for $89.99 (and no shipping costs)a roll. They are ordering it and I'll get it on Tuesday.

That is good news!

Hi Guys,
I found out that one can get a 150' roll of something called "Stucco Netting" and the roll is 371/2 " tall. It is really much stronger than chicken wire which it resembles. The wire of which it is made is 17 gauge ! It is so tough that it is difficult to bend for and old duffer like me. But, boy oh boy, this stuffe will keep in (or out) gorillas and will not corrode! I got mine at Lowes Hardware and it cost only about $68.00 for a veteran. Not as fine mesh as hardware cloth (Why is wire called cloth anyway?) but is great for weaned chickens to full sized adults. The mesh is about 1.5". Now that I have let the cat out of the bag I had better go get another roll or two as the price is bound to go up now.
My best to all,
Neal, the Zooman

Thanks Neal!

On a different thread, someone posted that you can check with a stucco company to see if they have any damaged rolls. They are supposed to go for a discount, like half price, but still be fine for using as chicken wire.

Seriously adorable!

Thank you for sharing.

A Silkie with goslings - that I would love to see!

I recently got 3 young silkie/bantam cochin mixes and I'm very curious to see if they will live up to the broody reputation come springtime.

Genius! and OCD but Genius!

I have saved several batches of hatching eggs using the battery backup with the genesis 1588 incubators.

if you're looking for something small, I'm going to have some small OEGB/Modern Game bantam crosses in a few weeks. Nothing fancy, but the should be quite small.

Thank you so much for letting me know! As much as I would love a little OEGB bantam though they would not be suited for our current living situation, but possibly in the future! I'm happy to say I've found and chosen a breeder, and we'll be driving down, picking out, and picking up our girls in the end of december!

Very clever and I thought about doing something similar.

I know there's been some debate but I plan on using fipronil (not Frontline, a knock-off) for killing skin lice along with poultry dust on the birds & bedding. These are topical flea drops for dogs.

Edited to Add: I've had a couple people advise that coconut oil works quite well to remove egg clusters from feather shafts. I guess you'd have to bathe them after to remove the oil.
Reminds me of when I had an OEGB hen stick herself sideways to a mouse glue trap. I had no idea just how small a space she could squeeze herself into to get at birdseed.

Dish soap works GREAT for unsticking chicks - but then you have a grumpy wet hen.

i use the spray o from time to time a spray under each wing and near the vent
