Marek's isn't cancer per se, but can cause cancer to develop later (around 2 years old or so) if the bird survives the initial stages and makes it to adulthood.
Yes, that is what I said.This has nothing to do with the company wanting to protect their investment. I don't care what brand you use, as long as you use the correct amount to kill mites without contributing to resistance. Here is a quote from an IPM site.
Using rates lower than those recommended for a particular pest favors survival of the stronger individuals in the pest population.
How do you know, when you are using a garden spray for insects on plants, that you are using the proper dilution?
There's a difference of .15-.5% which gets diluted in a garden spray- with 44.2% in the spray (again to be diluted) which has been designed and tested for use against mites on chickens. There's a huge difference between the amounts .5% and 44.2%.
mareks is like hpv. It has an initial infection that nearly all chickens get--even those inoculated--and then a percentage, about 3% of not vaccinated and 1.5% of vaccinated will get cancer at about age two.Marek's isn't cancer per se, but can cause cancer to develop later (around 2 years old or so) if the bird survives the initial stages and makes it to adulthood.

Hen B had cancer. The case summary says, "Hen B had a widespread oviductal carcinoma (cancer) which likely contributed to the enlarged abdomen noticed; evidence of cancer metastasis was present in the lung." Both hens had salpingitis/yolk peritonitis.Hen b it's says had adenocarcinoma. Is this DX Different in poultry? My understanding it's cancer.
adenocarcinoma (A-deh-noh-KAR-sih-NOH-muh)l
Cancer that begins in glandular (secretory) cells. Glandular cells are found in tissue that lines certain internal organs and makes and releases substances in the body, such as mucus, digestive juices, or other fluids. Most cancers of the breast, pancreas, lung, prostate, and colon are adenocarcinomas.
It was probably the new one that is not from Mareks.Hen B had cancer. The case summary says, "Hen B had a widespread oviductal carcinoma (cancer) which likely contributed to the enlarged abdomen noticed; evidence of cancer metastasis was present in the lung." I went with my Wife today to see an Endocrinologist. She verified that she is a candidate for parathyroid tumor surgery. Because of our insurance, we cannot refer to UC San Francisco but need to see a surgeon here first. She will also have a scan for the tumor(there are four glands and usually only one has the tumor) and another one for bone density. She likely has some level of osteoporosis.
If we had different insurance, she could be directly or self referred to UCSF or UCDMC. At least we are on track for getting this fixed now. Woodland Health care has been watching this since at least 2008. Now with kidney stones they see it as a "problem"
UGH!
We were in Sacramento yesterday,too. Who knows we could have passed each others paths and not even known itMy eggs for Frieda arrived at the Crescent City post office this morning!
We're in Sacramento until Monday(I waved at Woodland as we went by yesterday
)
The same can be said about human diseases too. Tons of things that can go wrong and not very many with vaccines to prevent them. There is not enough money in studying illness in poultry to be worth them putting much into saving them. I think the only thing they do much with is things that are likely to impact industry. The monetary value is low enough for each individual ( not much time between hatch and slaughter or egg laying life span). More cost effective to slaughter them all and start over.
The "State of Jefferson" thin is going on again though. Personally...I think they should find one spot where 95% of the people want it, then everyone else who also does can move there with them. I don't think they have a clue what is involved in starting from scratch. (There...I am down off my soapbox now)![]()
