I have a question: We have the water for our chickens in the Buckets with the nipples on the bottom.... Do you think the heat tape with a sensor would be better than the bird bath heater with a sensor? I need to get something going because we are getting cold at night... I would welcome advice with the pros and the cons....
By the way our chickens are doing great in their insulated coop.... We are getting 6 eggs a day now so that's nice.... Rae
Where do you live? In woodland, we do not need to heat water to avoid freezing the chicken water so I do not know what works best.

I would go with what fits your budget and is not too expensive and heats the least amount.(unless you live above 3000 feet.

You really do need a water heater!

My Mom lives in Shingletown, CA at about 4300 ft. It gets cold enough to break pvc pipes there.

We never get to freezing in SoCal so can't help you about heaters. But you're right about the egg-laying -- after Fall molt and getting past our October heatwave, the girls have been laying like crazy in spite of the shorter days!

Submersible fish tank heater. Some folks use a water heater element but you need pro skills to install it.

Quote: The spray worked well, I could see areas starting to heal. Yesterday she was doing really well, she ate and drank on her own, but by evening her comb had turned a very dark shade of purple on the spikes. Her breathing was normal, but this morning she was dead.
Sad she didn't make it, but I think I gave her the best chance to recover.

That's great news! Do you think you could share some photos? I'd love to see them.

Sometimes they just do not get over the shock of the attack!

You did make her last days more comfortable.
