Seems to be the year of the rooster at my place too. Our of 10 feed store chicks I bought as sexed pullets I ended up with 2 boys and one was a wellie boy which shouldnt have happened as they are fairly sexable at hatch.

Of my own hatches 7 boys and 4 girls too early to tell on the most recent Pita buff mix. (Still could reclass one of the boys but not looking good)

I have 4 Pita Boys coming along I think I have by backup boy picked out (2 are still too young to really tell)

Will probably try to keep the surprise delaware boy and a Pita the rest are either auction as young guys or freezer camp a bit later. Have some eggs in the bator now and am probably going to take a break till sept

I have three 3 week old silkied Serama cockerels for sale! My last hatch was all boys

! These guys need to go ASAP!! Only local pickup until the NPIP process is complete. I am very close to Sacramento,CA. $25 each. They look like they are following in their parents footsteps!

Lol if only I didn't have so many of my own roosters lol... :)

Yeah same thing happened to us from tractor supply. We had purchased 6 pullets and 3 were roosters. Ugh bad odds there...

okay, I agree, she is scratching the naked ones back, too... it makes me angry.... I have 14 Australorps for over a year and none of mine behave in this manner. Thank you so much...Now I don't feel so bad about my feelings....

The very first bully I had to re-home was such a mean Marans that attacked the 2 little Silkies that I had absolutely no hard feelings getting her outta here! She layed a couple medium brown eggs a week but for a 7-lb hen her eggs were never as large as our White Leghorn's eggs! So it was a double no-heartbreak for me to re-home her into an egg-seller's flock.

This might be a repeat photo post but this is what the Marans did to our poor little Silkie before we realized she wasn't molting - poor thing! When we saw a 2nd Silkie suddenly missing feathers and the Marans viciously attacking the Silkies in the yard it hit us like a brick what her nasty nature was like.

I'm also on the 'year of the rooster' train. I am saving some space in freezer camp. I FINALLY got a few female silkies, and that used up my girl luck for the whole summer, I guess. I also have a Welsummer cockerel from Tractor Supply (and I am not planning on breeding them, so he is gonna go to freezer camp). Every single EE/OE/Favaucana/Sapphire layer I tried to hatch has turned out male. They'll all wind up in the freezer as well. Almost every Wyandotte I managed to hatch is looking male as well. Add onto that the fact that between my new incubator NOT living up to the Brinsea and my own eggs hatch rate has dropped dramatically, and my suspicion that my post office has started x-raying eggs or something because suddenly I can't hatch a shipped egg to save my life, and it all adds up to a frustrating summer for chicken keeping so far. BUT- I did wind up with a few female Silkies at long last, so I am holding on to the positives.

My chocolate Orpington rooster that barely survived the dog attack is seemingly quite healthy, but does not seem to be breeding his hens anymore. I never see him cover them, and I do not see bullseyes from his flock anymore. I am really bummed about that, I was looking forward to having chicks from him. I have a little cuckoo chocolate Orp cockerel growing out from a 4-H fundraiser to replace him as a breeder for the chicks I want to add to my flock, but I am really attached to this chocolate. He is so good to his ladies and so gentle with people and so handsome, so I think when the replacement breeder is ready I will let the chocolate have some of my non-breeder hens I have, like my old rickety production reds and some of the motley crew of hens I got just to try out breeds that I didn't end up pursuing. If he's not even trying to breed, he should be easier for the oldest girls to live with.

One more bit of good chicken news- one of my chicken crazy nieces in Redding has finally been given permission by her parents to get a few hens. They want hens at POL, and I offered to help her find some but she wants to shop in my flocks. I know already she's going to swipe one of my buff Silkies and is eyeballing my lavender and red Orpington pullets that are just about to lay any day now, but it'll be worth it to see that little chicken addict happy.

Hi Spring Peeper,
I dont know if you are interested but I just hatched some orpingtons and I am sure some will be roosters. Plus I have my chocolate Orp Rooster who is very nice to me and the hens except he overbreeds them. No feathers are left on their backs. I was hoping he would slow down. I may have a cockerel available if you are interested.
