Consider the crows a blessing. They chase away hawks because they sometimes prey on their young. I haven't lost any birds to hawks or even seen any in the area since I started feeding the crows and encouraging them to hang around.

I used to do that too but then my birds caught lice from the crows.

I've read c rows eat chickens to though

Only baby chicks. I brood all my chicks myself so no worries for me, the only hen I allow to brood her own is in a covered pen.

Yikes. Never had an issue with the crows getting close enough to spread lice. They generally stay in the trees surrounding my coop.

Oh no one of the ones you hatched?

No, it was a frizzled EE from Papa's Poultry. We often have trouble with hawks here in the Fall cause they migrate through this area. I had a hen attacked by a hawk 2 years ago in October, but she survived. The poor little chick didn't have a chance though. :-(

On the bright side, I think the first chocolate EE chick I hatched is female. I am thinking that 5 out of 11 remaining chicks look female so far, fingers crossed. I ended up having to cull the super late hatching chocolate chick, cause it was developing a worsening crossbeak. First time I ever had to cull a chick; it was really hard.

I'm so sorry for both of your losses. Culling a chick is the absolute worst thing in the world. My first ever cull was also a crossbeak chick... only five days old.

Good luck with your other chicks! Fingers crossed you have lots of pullets.

Any northern CA folks encountering Fowl Pox? Several cases have been reported to a 530 Facebook group. Many are in the Chico & Yuba City surrounding areas.

The latest issue of the CAHFS bulletin has some cases of fowlpox with chickens that came in for necropsy.

IF you live in an area with it, then vaccinated for it.

Poultry and Other Avian

Poultry poxvirus infections. During August and September, numerous avian poxvirus infections were identified in pheasants and backyard chickens. Individual birds had lesions of proliferative dermatitis and conjunctivitis (dry pox) and/or stomatitis and pharyngitis (wet pox). Affected sites had typical lesions of avian pox including large eosinophilic intracytoplasmic viral inclusions.
