Hi all, I know there is a lot of expertise here so I thought I'd ask you all for advice. I have 8 chicks outside with a broody right now & a few of them keep getting pasty butt. I have had to wash them several times because there is a lot of poop stuck to their butts & I don't want anything to get blocked up! I have never had this problem before & it is a total pain having to catch them, so I thought I'd ask for opinions.

Could it be from cocci, because I know I have that in my soil and they are not on medicated feed? I also have 3 chicks indoors that I am treating for cocci but they have not had pasty butt. They are all 8 days old.
Pasty butt usually happens when the chicks are stresses. That can be from hard hatching or from being too cold. They might have been cold from the weather last week.

keep cleaning them and if momma will let you, give them each a drop of poly vi sol without iron twice a day for a couple of day. It can also help to give them a bowl of chick grit.

It is smaller than regular grit. TSC should have some.

I think I have some chick grit around here somewhere; I'll look for that. We did not hatch the chicks here; I got them in the mail & gave them to the hen. Now I am hoping I did not give her too many for her to keep warm. They are definitely very active chicks & I feel like they are not spending as much time getting warm under the mama as the other chicks we have had before. Thanks for the always helpful advice Ron. :)

If they were shipped, then it is likely shipping stress. That comes from being cold, hungry and jostled around for two days.

They will be fine soon.
