Talking about Barred Rocks, does anyone on here have non-hatchery birds? The teen who helps take care of my breeding flocks of Pita PInta and Langshan is interested in breeding them. He has a very small flock but they are hatchery birds. He wants to breed them for eggs and meat.

Chicks being checked out by the Wheaties. It was a little cold in the shade, so put the light out too.

I love the rabbit cages for chicks because I can use the top to let them be outside part of the day. Also I can put perches in the bars.
IM thinking I want to do rabbit cages as brooders as well. I need more heat plates though

No, but I have a bunch of English Orpington cockerels if he wants to breed them. :-) They seem to be really good dual purpose birds so far; they get really big. My 8 month old Orpington pullet is HUGE now. She is pretty skittish but we had to catch her the other day to dust her for mites & I think she weighs as much as one of my kids, lol.

I have a couple that I use if I need extra indoor ones. The only thing that I don't like about them is that the chicks kick pine shavings out and make a huge mess. I need to find something to line sides up another 4-6 in in order to prevent that.

I'll pass on the info to him. What color are your orpington?

If he wants a pair I think I have a chocolate pair. And I have 2 jubilee cockerels (gorgeous & nice personalities). I also have 2 black cockerels split to chocolate. I might have a mottled blue cockerel as well, not sure yet. The cockerels are all 5 weeks old.

I have a 7 month old black pullet also, but she is from BBS lines, so does that mean she would have to be bred with a BBS cockerel? Not sure how that works.
