California - Northern

Good Question!

Buff orpingtons do fine here as long as you use something to keep them cool. The most important thing is shade and water for them to drink. I also use a mist system. Currently I use orbit mist strings and a timer. I check accuweather and set the mist to come on when the temp is forecast to go over 90 and shut off when it goes under 90. Usually from 2pm to 6 or 7pm.

I have this one with two extension kits:

Any hose end timer will work for auto turn on and off

Thanks! How do you connect a timer with your spigot/hose? I have a mister (homemade, so I'd probably get something like what you linked), but I've always had to manually turn on and off, but this summer I won't be home during the day.

The timer connects to your faucet. You run a garden hose to where the string is and connect the string to the hose. The connection is a standard hose end.

There are a lot of options for faucet timers too

Hi Cali Peeps...:woot
We are pipping from Santa Rosa,CA. Some say that's not North CA. Oh Well! To me, it is pretty simple: SF = NORTH and LA = SOUTH
Who cares? I'm from Brazil anyways...so you're all NORTH to me! :lau

I'm sad I missed the Pacific Poultry Breeders last weekend. I'd have loved to take my girls there.

Anyhow...I have a small flock of heritage chicken and I have a lot of fertile eggs that I am willing to sell or trade. Please let me know if you are interested in either :celebrate

My breeds:
- white orpington hen
- buff orpington hen
- lavender orpington hen/rooster

It is great to see you here!

I would have given you some eggs Saturday. I have Ameraucana crossed to Marans and f2 Olive dark eggs bred back to my Ameraucana. Really enjoyed talking with you, Tarron, and PJ and Bill.
I am really off my game. I didn't think to set anything up ahead of time.
I will, however, be willing to come to you to get some.
Would you let me know when you have a dozen + or - collected, if that's ok?
Thank you!!

Hi! I'm in Northern California, not far outside of Sacramento. Question for you all. It gets super hot here in the summer - like weeks of 105-115. Am I crazy or cruel if I get a Buff Orpington rather than breed that tolerates heat better? Anyone else in the area have healthy and happy Buff Orps despite the insane heat?
Ron's advice is spot-on. I have a misting system thanks to him.
I also got a small round rubber feed trough - I fill it halfway with water & place frozen gallon-sized water jugs in each hot morning. The birds will wade right in & cool off.
