I was a bad girl today! I went to Half Moon Bay Feed to pick up some chicks to replace the one rooster I had to rehome. We have 5 girls, and it just wasn't the same without that extra one. Soooo.... I had planned to get some barred rocks and buff orpingtons, but when I got there today they had sold out of the barred rocks already. I ended up getting 4 buff orpingtons and 4 "Ameraucanas". I know we'll have to find homes for some of them later, but I plan to grow them out some and then pick 2-3 to keep and rehome the rest.
1 of the Ameraucanas definitely has green legs, but the other three look more beige-ish. Do they turn green after awhile if they are EEs? I can't wait to see what they look like when they are older. Those were 3-4 days old and the buffs were a 1-1/2 weeks. I was so surprised that they were so tiny! I don't remember my girls being that small when we got them in October. These new ones look so teeny. They are already roaming around their brooder and checking it out. They are so cute! I'm not sure how we're going to tell the buffs apart since they pretty much look the same right now.
I'm already thinking about how I can build another coop but bigger for these girls and keep more than I wanted to... but we'll see. It took us awhile to do the last one, and I'm pretty sure hubby won't want to start that project all over again. I know it will be hard to part with some of them later though.
I tried picking all chicks that I could so NO comb at all. There were a few in their bins that had combs already... and I also put my hand it to see which ones seemed to be more outgoing like coming up to my hands or standing tall to check it out rather than hide. I'm not sure that's a good test of which ones will turn out to be roosters, but I did it anyway.
I'll take some pics tomorrow and post them.
Anyone come back from the show today yet?
