California - Northern

You have such beautiful chickens, Jeremy! I would love to have enough room to have a larger variety of birds! I should be thankful that our city allows us to have 10 but my want list is closer to 20!

I'm looking to add a couple Marans to my flock. Does anyone know where I might find chicks or even fertile eggs in my area. I live in the East Bay and I'm willing to travel within a 100 mile or so radius.

I have a broody Delaware pullet!

Does anyone local have fertile hatching eggs right now they would like to share!?

What type of marans are you looking for? I will have BCM (black copper marans) chicks available in March.

I travel out your way a few times a year. I can bring eggs even sooner, probably the 3rd or 4th week in February.

I would love some BCM chicks. They were my first choice but are hard to find so I thought any type would do. I would prefer chicks so I wouldn't have to set up an incubator. Also I haven't hatched chicks since a science project in grade school and you don't want to know how long ago that was. March would be great as far as timing, I have four cockerels I have to re-home to make room so that gives me some time. Will you be coming this way in March?

I was a bad girl today! I went to Half Moon Bay Feed to pick up some chicks to replace the one rooster I had to rehome. We have 5 girls, and it just wasn't the same without that extra one. Soooo.... I had planned to get some barred rocks and buff orpingtons, but when I got there today they had sold out of the barred rocks already. I ended up getting 4 buff orpingtons and 4 "Ameraucanas". I know we'll have to find homes for some of them later, but I plan to grow them out some and then pick 2-3 to keep and rehome the rest.

1 of the Ameraucanas definitely has green legs, but the other three look more beige-ish. Do they turn green after awhile if they are EEs? I can't wait to see what they look like when they are older. Those were 3-4 days old and the buffs were a 1-1/2 weeks. I was so surprised that they were so tiny! I don't remember my girls being that small when we got them in October. These new ones look so teeny. They are already roaming around their brooder and checking it out. They are so cute! I'm not sure how we're going to tell the buffs apart since they pretty much look the same right now.

I'm already thinking about how I can build another coop but bigger for these girls and keep more than I wanted to... but we'll see. It took us awhile to do the last one, and I'm pretty sure hubby won't want to start that project all over again. I know it will be hard to part with some of them later though.

I tried picking all chicks that I could so NO comb at all. There were a few in their bins that had combs already... and I also put my hand it to see which ones seemed to be more outgoing like coming up to my hands or standing tall to check it out rather than hide. I'm not sure that's a good test of which ones will turn out to be roosters, but I did it anyway.

I'll take some pics tomorrow and post them.

Anyone come back from the show today yet?

Hatcheries that sell to feed stores don't sell "pure" ameraucanas but EEs are great too! I have both and they are both great chickens. Green legs are not the only thing that says EE. After you post pics we will be able to tell more. You can also post pics on the Ameraucana thread to get their opinions.

Given I got them all together at the same feed store, they are probably all EE's... but I don't care. I knew when I went that they were EEs and not true Ameraucanas. I was hoping to get a few barred rocks and then just a couple EEs but that's ok. My older EE is the prettiest girl I have. One has a bigger, fluffier head than the rest. I can't wait to see how all of them turn out.
