California - Northern

I was wondering if anyone if interested in this fella? He's 17 weeks old. I don't have any plans for him but I think he could be of good use to someone! Both of his parents are f1 olive eggers(BCMxEE). He has a (sorta sloppy) pea comb and he looks a lot like his daddy but with more white. I'm in the Chico area and I'm also headed down to Pacifica for Thanksgiving too.

This is an update on my Barred Rock Pullets. I have had them for three plus weeks now and they are fitting in well. At first they had some issues with weak shells and eating the soft eggs. They also seemed a bit protein starved but have stabilized now. One of them was on the top roost with the others up there. I have three BA's that stay on the floor of the coop in the corner.

I ran out of the Modesto Mills non soy feed. I ordered a bag of layer form Azure Standard but it did not make it onto the truck. I bought a bad of Omega 3 feed from TSC until I could get to Dixon to get the Modesto feed. It is not as good and on Saturday wound up with weevils. I tossed it along with the rest of the scratch and drove to OSH to get a pantry pest trap. I bought a bag of Ultra Kibble. Apparently you can mix Ultra Kibble with Organic scratch at a 10 to one ratio and calcium to make your own layer feed. It is supposed to cost about half of what regular feed costs. I bought one form Ozbo, since Jeffers wanted $25.00 to ship it. If I get brave I might try this.

So after getting the Modesto mills layer and Ultra Kibble going, the soft shells and egg eating have stopped

Yes! I am very happy I got those two Barred Plymouth Rocks. We had them growing up and thought they were great. The Roosters were good fried and the old hens made great Chicken stew too(sorry I couldn't resit

). Actually I don't think I could eat one now though.

If you guys have not found the first egg count down forum here you should check it out. It's quite fun. Pele started it and she reminded me that it is time to add light for the chickens if you are so inclined. I did and last night was the first night with the lights coming on at 3:30 in the morning. It was amazing! The chickens were so much happier this morning. Yesterday one of the RIR's was acting like a prisoner raking his cup across the bars. She was slashing the vent screen with her beak

This morning they were calmly walking around and were much happier. I need to add a window to the coop...

My grown daughter has that condition too. Gloomy weather has an effect on her.
I have never used lights before to supplement daylight hours but am thinking of it for the new quail I am raising. I was told the quail will lay an egg a day all year long if they get 14 hours of light a day. I don't know if that is a good thing though. I may alternate the breeding pens so not all the birds get the supplemental light all the time & see how that works. Right now I can't get enough quail eggs. I have some pickling to take to the Chickenstock picnic if I can keep my son out of them til them.............LOL He has his nose out of joint because I told him to keep out of them.

Does anyone know of any chicken friendly rentals in the Eureka area?? I'm having problems trying to find someplace that I can relocate both myself and my flock!

Well it's snowing pretty good here in Reno (actually we are about 30mins N of Reno). We have about an inch on the ground right now. Our new dog loves it! He is whining because we won't let him back out in it.

Good luck with the home search Torrelee!

Yea not a problem here either but I lived in San Joaquin Valley for several years. Once we went with fog so bad we were at 1/4 mile or less visibility for 28 days straight.
