Pics! I find it annoying to take pics, send to my email, then save then upload...this is easier. Sorry you have to click on links. I am an instagram addict.

Debi said she tried to make sure they are all girls. That was so sweet of her!

Not fancy pics but I'll get some better ones tomorrow. We were in a flurry getting everything done once we got them in.

eta: i will get some pics with my real camera so no one has to click on links.

Yes, the Marans look like Pullets. I think the Orpington are pullets too, but I don't have those.

zoowemamma I will have a black true Ameraucana I will give away if you or anyone is interested. I am about a hour east of Sacramento. I will also have a few other types coming up soon.
Penedesenca or welsummer crossed with a Legbar
Wow I saw pictures of black Ameraucanas. Gorgeous bird! The are built so different from some of the other more standard chicken shape!

This is soooo horrible. I already like them too much. Guess how many times I've had to change their waterer? NONE. How many times I have had to give them fresh food? NONE. How many times in the past 4 hours I'd had to mess with their bedding? NONE. Noise level? What noise? Sounds like tiny little birds outside my window! I am still really glad I did ducks FIRST because I might have gotten too frustrated comparing the 2. And you really can't. Two totally different kind of fowl. I REALLY appreciate the tidiness. They poop a lot. BUT ducks shoot poop and so far chickens seem to drop poop. I vote for dropping over shooting. :P

AND I put a wooden rod in there for a roost and the Orps totally found it and really enjoyed hopping up and looking down on the little Marans who were just not quite making it. :P

It's hard to be sure, but the way the comb looks, the way they stand and their legs.

These are mine at five days old:

Welp! I am just thrilled to bits! Now I must decide over summer/fall/winter which breed of the 2 want to breed and chase down a good Roo for them.

I'll be posting some better pics in the next couple days. Maybe better details.I am a photographer in my spare time so I can't help it. I'll try to control myself though and not go bonkers in here. ;)

I'm reading up on the different parts of chickens/ducks/geese right now. I think knowing how they are built will help me know more about them. I'd love to be able to tell in time- what a good breeder chicken looks like, a ho hum one etc...my kids will be starting 4-H this year and we are all excited about that. I hope I can learn a little through their projects too.

Ron, are your Marans pretty chill? I've held the chicks a little bit and so far the between the Orps and the Marans- the Marans will sit quietly in my hand and the Buffs cheep cheep and try to get away. I don't know if that is a breed trait or just happens to be so with this group.

The Marans are kind of in the middle. They let me hold them, but do try to try to get away. The Australorps and the EO Basque are the friendliest. The Barred Rocks are the least friendly. Others have a different experience with Barred Rocks and mine might not be as friendly because I did not raise them. I got them as started pullets.

The more you handle them and give them treats, the friendlier they will be. So far the Marans are quiet. The two roos have very pretty copper colors coming out.

Yes, chickens are no where near as much work as Ducks and you will just love Debbies chickens. She breeds for friendly chickens.

Bye,

Ron

I do notice even as babies the Marans don't cheep near as much as the Orps do. Chicks are very very busybodies. I'm impressed.

Hey Zoo, I wish I would have been on here this week. My life is so crazy with getting ready to move that I am running around ragged. Guess where I am moving?! To redding. Anyway, I will have some FBCMs roos for you down the road for share I have hatched them from three different breeders so will have a diverse blood line. I also have some Blue Copper Marans that are growing up nicely. Anyway, are you interested in any more chicks? I am bringing some 1-3 day old chicks up for my neighbor in redding this weekend and have been selling quite a few extras. Anyone else in the sacramento or redding area interested in some chicks?

Clearly I am over run with chickens and have completely lost my mind. Buy some chickens from me and help me pay for all these eggs!!! :-0

Prices on chicks that I have are anywhere from $5-15. All are straight run.
vaccination for Mareks is optional as I have plans to do so tomorrow afternoon on all the chicks that I am keeping. Maybe I'll go take some pictures and post on here to try to entice some buyers to save me from myself!!! :-)
